The bible is a compilation of many peoples experience of god (whatever it might be), compiled over ages -literally. The Old Testament is the book of the Jews. The NT comes in two varieties. 1. Catholic, including Greek works in the OT written in the 300 years immediately before the birth of Jesus. 2. Protestant, minus the pseudopigrapher (those greek books) becuase of an interesting sotry. When Jesus was alive, the Grekk books were a part ofthe Jewish testament. When the Romans Sacked Jerusalem and Israel generally in 135 AD, many Jewish splinter groups were destroyed. The Essenes, Zionist (Rad against the Romans), Saducees - leaving the pharisees in charge. The Pharisees back lashed against all fo the reform groups and made Judaism more Jewish by stripping out the Greek books.

So, When Luther alongs in the C.16th and wants to return Chrisitanity to the true way, he grabs the OT of the day - post Pharisee bastardisation, and declares that it is the old book of the Testament that and so we have too diffreent bibles in Western Christianity.
