View Full Version : Hunting

This weekend, the deer hunting season began where I live. I'd like to go this year, but I don't have a permit, let alone someone to go with. But it brings up a major issue, imo.
Most of Orthodox Judaism prohibits hunting. I think that's bunk. Pre-Sinai, we see Isaac hunting with a bow and arrow. During Sinai, we have Leviticus 17:3. Post-Sinai, we have a mention of hunting partridges in 1 Samuel 26:20.
Does anyone opppose this view? Why or why not?
If not, does anyone know of any other good examples, especially post-sinai?

The Tenach certainly doesn't condemn hunting: indeed, you mention Lev. 17:13, which gives practical advice on what to do to make the meat ritually suitable (of course, assuming that the animal is clean--and to the best of my knowledge deer in North America are certainly acceptable).
I may be mis-remembering, but doesn't the Orthodox issue with hunting have to do with the possibility of putting the animal through a greater amount of pain or suffering than is absolutely necessary? If that's the case, then it deals more with Rabbinic interpretation and Jewish culture than the actual Covenant or the Law.
However, don't take the above as actual advice from a religious point-of-view: I am not a Rabbi ... I don't even play one on TV.

Oh, by the way ... did you have to get me thinking about hunting season? I'd give much for some venison right now....

However, some Orthodox claim that it should not be translated as hunt, but more like "trap". I disagree with this based on other passages which (IMO) clearly show that it means hunting.

That is also another argument. But, does one experience more pain when being shot in the heart than when you are beheaded?

You aren't the only one.... :(

Karaite,
I'm a Christian and I'll be elk hunting next week.
Maybe you ought to think about crossing over. :nsm:

I'd gladly hunt with any of y'all... if it were not for tests and such that I've got to take in my classes.

Hmmm.... Feel like adopting a new pet who loves venison? I'm charming, cheerful, and house-broken ... I even put the seat back down!
