I was out leafleting cars in church parking lots yesterday, for the National Right to Life, actually it was for my niece who needed some help, the thinking was to remind the church going voters in our area who the pro-life candidates are. My son and I were given two LDS churches, among others, to "hit" during services.
We looked in the newspaper to verify the times, the first service went well, there was a lot completely full of cars, however when we returned for the meeting of the next ward, there were only about ten cars, a man came out to investigate what we were doing, and I asked him, "Why are there no people here for the service?"
He responded, "because of Halloween, we only have one service".
I've never heard of such a thing, is it common practice or was the man mis-informed?
Or was he pulling my leg?

He's pulling your leg.
My ward met for 1:00-4:00 p.m. service as usual; I was there.
Canceling church for Halloween would be outrageous, no congregation would allow that.
Possible reasons the parking lot was empty:
You arrived an hour early due to the daylight savings time shift.
It was Stake Conference.
It's a one-ward building.
The locals riot on Halloween, egg cars, and break windows. Churchgoers are so intimidated that the two wards arranged to meet together. (completely improbable, unless you live in Detroit?)

I live near Detroit and the services here are not at night so I doubt that would be an issue.

That's kind of what I suspected, the more I think about it, the more I think I got the two stakes mixed up.
Not that I'm complaining, the wind was blowing 40 miles an hour and it was snowing.

If you don't mind me asking XM, where near that pearl of the midweast do you live? I lived in SE Michigan for 15 years, and still have family and friends there.

Ugh, that sounds miserable. Thanks for your work to save the nation in such adverse weather.
Or, to use 1980s Utah slang: Good on ya'

I took an informal survey while I was out and it went like this:
The Liberal Church List: based upon percentage of Kerry Edwards bumper stickers
Most Liberal = Lutheran
Second = Methodist
Third = Catholic
There were many churches that didn't have a car with one Kerry Edwards placard.
