How do those who believe that the scriptures before Abraham can be taken in a non-literal way explain the geneologies before Abraham?

I've done a lot of study on that particular subject. I came across a book, (sorry it's long out of print) called New Dscoveries in Babyonia About Genesis. The author did a lot of digging in the area of Babylon. It seems the way of sending communications was by way of baked clay tablets. They wrote with a wedge shaped stylus which gave the name cuneoform which means wedge.
There are repeated statements in Genesis like: These are the generations of... Evidently these clay tablets were precious history of a people, and were preserved for generations. We can read some of these old clay letters today. Evidently Moses, during his forty year exile in Midian, which is moden Saudi Arabia, had access to these clay tablets and wrote the book of Genesis. It least that's the story as I read it. It seems as good as any other. Remember, Moses was an educated man.
Of course, behind it all there is the idea the God had a hand in preserving these writings so when the proper man came along with time on his hands, he could write it all down. Writing had been invented by this time and papyrus as a writing surface, so Moses was the man.
