What would have happened if Carthage won the Punic Wars and sacked Rome and razed it to the ground? From a purely historical perspective I doubt Jesus would have preached or gained much audience if he did, as Palestine wouldn't be under the command of Rome. There would be no census hence no reason for Mary to go looking for a manger in Bethlehem, no Roman soldier to be Jesus' possible father etc. Without Jesus Judaism would probably fade away for new religions, Greek possibly to dominate Palestine. Judaism and the Jews would play a much less prominent role in history. Islam, too, would never have been founded, so Zorostrianism (sp?) would be a major world relgion now as it was the religion of the mighty Persian Empire.
I think the Carthaginians worshipped Phoenician gods, who were more bllodthirsty than their Roman cousins, so maybe Carthaginian power would have spread throughout the Mediterranean and those places would be partaking in human sacrifices now. Maybe norther Europe would never have been influenced by Roman or Greek culture and would be purely Celtic or Germanic in culture. Laws, ethics, philosophy would be uninfluenced by Greek learning, and would be much less developed.

I know this is a pointless exercise but it's fun anyway.

Any thoughts.
