Faith and Family Groups Warn Parents Against Purchasing Top Ten Worst Video Games

Ten of the most 'blood-soaked and anti-social' games on the market were listed as holiday gifts to avoid buying for unsuspecting parents and grandparents

Friday, Nov. 26, 2004 Posted: 8:19:35PM EST

Five faith and family based organizations released the list of the top ten “worst video games” to warn unsuspecting parents and grandparents before they purchase the “blood-soaked and anti-social” presents for their children.

To read the rest of the article click on the following link: http://www.christianpost.com/article/society/1207/section/faith.and.family.groups.warn.parents.against.purchasing.top.ten.worst.video.games/1.htm

You can also listen to the 12/16/04 Albert Mohler radio program where "Sister Patricia Wolf" blasts the video game industry: http://www.albertmohler.com/radio.html

While I may agree that those listed represent the top ten "worst" games this year as far as mature content is concerned, I would like to know what happened to the top ten worst book list, and the top ten worst movie list, and the top ten worst music list? Video games have ratings, should the book and music industries follow suite?

While I enjoy the Albert Mohler program, I had to stop listening to that particular program about the time the lady started talking about rape in video games. I've played and viewed screenshots of a TON of games, and never have I seen rape in a game. Even if there were a game with rape, would it not recive a mature rating. Furthermore, I was seriously doubting the woman's knowledge of the Old Testament. :sigh: I mean, would you give the Bible, as a whole, a "G" rating? :eh:

Actually, in Japan there exist pornographic dating sim games. But to my knowledge I believe they are unavailable in stores here, Thank God.

Game (and book and music) distributors love it when their products get put on these "10 Most Dangerous [insert catagory]" lists. Those lists tend to have the opposite effect as they intend. When a product gets placed on one of those lists, its sales are almost guaranteed to go up.

How stupid, it's hard to imagine anyone buying them, but then again, "The Sims" series seems to have sold rather well here.

Even if they were available in the U.S., I wouldn't have interest in them. But I wouldn't be surprised if pornographic games make it to the states one of these days...hmm on second thought, would the Leisure suit Larry series be considered soft porn?

True, negative publicity can be better than no publicity, so I think you may be right on target. And I can faintly remember my 14 and 15 year old mentality. :teeth:

In a joint statement released on Nov. 23, the five groups highlighted ten video games in the worst in terms of violence: (1) Doom 3; (2) Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas; (3) Gunslinger Girls 2; (4) Half Life 2; (5) Halo 2; (6) Hitman: Blood Money (releases in 2005); (7) Manhunt; (8) Mortal Combat: Deception; (9) Postal 2; and (10) Shadow Heart. the only one of those ive played is Postal2, and thats about the funnyest game i have ever played. stuff like using cats as silencers for your guns, and using a rotten cow head for a weapon (makes people vomit if they go near it) and the funny thing is, in that game you dont HAVE to be violent. you can do things without violence, but its more fun to do it like a lunatic, such as stealing and fighting instead of paying for stuff.(it says right on the box "its only as violent as you are") and i have to admit getting in a gunfight with gary coleman was pretty funny.

now im not saying that a 12 year old should be playing games like this, but for older guys like me its all in good fun (im 19). i thought of getting Doom 3 but it looked a little scary for me, but that doesnt mean its not a good game i guess.

all those games are rated M. its your responsibility as a parent to monitor what your kids play. you know who their freinds are and what music they listen to, know what games they play also. and just because their going around like crazy and beating up random people on a game doesnt mean there gonna do it in real life. ive been playing various games for years now, and as of yet i havent killed anyone, stolen anything, done drugs,or rolled a corvette at 110 miles an hour.

yeah. if imitating games was that bad of a concern, we would hear more reports of people trying to bang their heads on brick ceilings, spitting fireballs, eating strange mushrooms, and stomping on turtles. that Mario is a bad influence i tell you.

(i know he actually throws the fireballs, but you have to admit it looks like he spits them in the original game).

 oddly enough i was thinking the same thing.

Personally, I think the worst game ever is Rocky and Bullwinkle for the NES.

Gald to see Doom is still number 1. I can't believe Duke Nuke'em didn't make the list. Best first person shooter game of all time. They need to do more research. You wouldn't have the name of that pornographic dating sim games from Japan? Leisure Suit Larry is getting old.

Or Home Alone for the SNES. It was horrible.

Thanks to emulators and roms, I've played more than my fair share of old school crap. Don't laugh, but I think I briefly tried to play a Barbie game for the SNES. Needless to say, if there were a gamer hell, playing the Barbie video game for eternity would be among the worst punishment possible.

I've played an Urusei Yatsura game for nes once. Apparently you were supposed to be Lum. You couldn't see the floor in that game so there was alot of falling off invisible cliffs to my death. That game was truly an insult to the anime/manga series, which was pretty whack to begin with.

hey, don't knock the barbie :) barbie games got my daughter into the computer in the first place (though they are more modern PC ones, not anything as old as an SNES). she doesn't play much else (yet), but she likes paperboy & super mario bros running on the c64 emulator :)

Speaking of which, I believe the Atari "E.T." game is considered the worst game ever, with their version of Pacman a close second. (I saw a recent show about Atari's downfall where they confirmed that millions of "E.T." and other carts were buried in the New Mexico desert because they just couldn't be sold at any price.)

Ah yes, ET. I heard about that, though it was before my time. It sounds quite awful.

My father never had a problem with anything we played. He's a Christian but even hew would play Grand Theft Auto and Doom. I've thought alot about it and I still play violent games myself. Command & Conquer I just played before and most games are violent.

I'm 21 now and I honestly have reservations about the sorts of games that are getting released now. Like a Knight killing people with an old 8 bit game is one thing but a realistic game involving people shooting up an entire city is another. The games are looking so good now. I guess I'm a hypocrite because I both play and dissaprove of them. I think it's because I know what I'm playing and I think about it.

Guys can handle lots of violence; sex should be kept as far away from them as possible.

Girls mostly the opposite. Or something. Don't quote me on it.

Anyhow, Penny Arcade had something (http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2004-12-01) on this.
