I quote pg. 36 of Introduction to the Quran by A.Rahman.I.Doi, Professor, University of Ife, Nigeria:
"Also some verses had been cancelled by later revelations: "Whatever verses we cancel, or cause thee to forget, we bring a better or its like." To give one example, the verse, "Verily those who believe (Muslims) and they who follow the Jewish religion and the Christians and the Sabians, - whoever of these believeth in God and the Last Day, and doeth that which is right, shall have their reward with their Lord: fear shall not come upon them, neither shall they be grieved," is cancelled by "Who so desireth any other religion than Islam, that religion shall never be accepted from him, and in the next world he shall be among the lost."

Dr. Doi is a recognized Islamic scholar with several degrees from major universities. The example above serves to establish the fact that early Islam (the Meccan surahs) was modified when Mohammed came into power. It is the later surahs that serve as the springboard of the jihadist movement today.

Crusader,

As has already been pointed out to you most ably by Wolf, only some Muslims accept the doctrine of abrogation & it is not a mainstream muslim belief.

Would you accept a Muslim labelling all Christians Calvinists? or Aminians or even Nestorians? Why would you do the same unless your intent is misinformation.

Kiwi, it would appear that belief in abrogation of the Quran (which, incidentally, is taught in the Quran, itself), is not a minority view. I have repeatedly said that not all Muslims adhere to this doctrine - so please review my postings.

As far as all Christians being labeled Calivinists - interesting thought!

Since the Quran has been qouted by many Christians on this site as having glaring contradictions..wouldn't it make since abrogation is a policy to which all Muslims must adhere? Maybe my definition of abbrogation is wrong...

Basically, the contradictions are based on the fact that while in Mecca, Mohammed had little power. He urged his followers to be more subtle. He also wished to be accepted by the Jews as a "prophet," something they correctly refused to do.

In Medina, after assuming political as well as religious superiority, and being consumed by his goal to conquer Mecca and impose Islam on the whole of Arabia, the prophet's revelations grew more militant and less friendly toward "the people of the book," meaning Jews and Christians.

Eventually, his lust for power took complete control of him. He ordered his enemies killed, and called for the destruction of all who would not accept him as a messenger from God.
