I was not sure where to post this one but figured it was of most direct interest to Christians. Here in the UK the Public Broadcast TV Channel BBC2 plans to broadcast Jerry Springer The Opera immediately after Christmas. This musical, notorious for containing over 8,000 expletives, depicts the characters of Jesus, Mary and God as self-centred sexual deviants who give and receive extreme verbal abuse and a horrific series of blasphemies all in the name of comedy. The show's artistic director admits that it is a deliberate attack on good taste and the BBC concedes that the intended broadcast "pushes back the boudaries of taste and decency". Nevertheless, the show is planned to be transmitted without any cuts.

If you disagree with the BBC's plan to broadcast this material, please register your feelings with the BBC (info@bbc.co.uk) tel 08700 100222) or with Ofcom (contact@ofcom.org.uk) tel 0845 456 3000). Pleae pass this message to anyone else you feel would want to be aware of this.

Yes, I am aware this raises a whole lot of issues about censorship and so on, maybe we could continue that discussion later? For Christians outside UK please pray.

Blessings

A fellow believer

Keith

I have already written to the BBC, and written again after they changed something in Little Britain, but said JS would stay on the schedule.

Hi Solly

Thanks for the response. Sometimes I suppose we do what we can do. Would they still plan to broadcast it if the object of abuse had been Mohammed or Guru Nanak for example? I wonder. Not that I am advocating the behaviour shown by some groups from other faith communities but it is frustrating sometimes.:sigh:

They gave me the old, 'BBC2 is known for experiemental and challenging material' line, and that it was after the watershed, but I think it is a bit much that they will remove the WI symbol from a LB sketch, and let this pass. The words 'Camels Gnats Straining' comes to mind.

According the R4 this morning, 20,000+ complaints have been registered with the BBC about this, including those via Christian Voice, and Media Watch. the Beeb is still standing it's ground, this is 'high art' after all.

What really bugs me is that it's being paid for from the funds generated by a compulsory fee you pay for the privilege of receiving BBC. They're using my money to pay for this, and it's not even like Satellite or Cable which you choose to pay!

Despite the fact that the public have shown they don't want it, they're gonna push on regardless. They argue that it gives people outside London a chance to see it, but if that's the real reason why do this production and not a less-offensive West End production like Cats, We Will Rock You or Miss Saigon? It's just mindless.
