Iraq is getting major headlines today as a war rages there with America the primary player. We can only speculate at this point if a democracy will ever be established or get off the ground.
Many aspects present in our war, or conflict have Biblical aspects as ancient Babylon is just down river from Baghdad.
Ancient Babylon was the capital of the Middle-East and a kind of spiritual capital where many religions began and where Zoroastor lived, and Marduk or Mazda was worshipped, and the Magi divined the Star of the Jewish Messiah. All that was evil and that would become evil was given birth in ancient Babylon. The Tower of Babel was there and from that spot the world’s languages were formed as a judgment against this wicked empire and even the world.
In 586 B.C., the Babylonians attacked the kingdom of Judah, destroying the first Temple in Jerusalem. The most prominent Jewish citizens, including Daniel, were brought back to Babylon as slaves. Some 70 years later, given the opportunity to return home, most chose to stay in Babylon.
The Garden of Eden was likely here, along the Tigris-Euphrates River.
Ninevah, (near to Mosel) first mentioned in Genesis, is the city to which God sent Jonah to preach repentance.
Abraham was called out of this area to a new Promised Land. He lived in the land known as Ur of the Chaldees in Babylon.
Here Daniel was thrown in the lion's den and was miraculously spared.
The book of Revelation talks a lot about "end-time" Babylon. We also read about "mystery Babylon" in the Bible. Just exactly what eschatological role modern-day Iraq plays is a debatable topic, but she likely will be a player on this scene, and perhaps as the "spirit of Babylon".
We cannot dismiss Iraq's role past, present, or future. God has always featured her prominently and likely always will; thus it is unlikely just a coincidence that she is making headlines daily today.
Have we now set the stage for final show down, and is really a spiritual battle for the survival of Israel? Can the final battle be far off?
