Do you enjoy an occasional espresso with the after dinner mints? Or do you make a more regular contribution to the 2.5 billion cups of coffee drunk each day? It peps you up, lures you out of bed and helps you face the day ahead. The rich aroma and flavour are welcoming and familiar. So what's wrong with your coffee habit? How about low energy, extra stress, mineral depletion, exhausted adrenal glands, indigestion, anxiety and mood swings.
If this sounds like you, it may be time to re-think your habit and discover that caffeine, the very substance you believed was keeping you going, is actually draining your energy! Black coffee has a zero Calorie count, so it can't provide energy - although you may think you feel energised. Caffeine is known as a psycho-stimulant because it works directly on the brain. It improves reaction time and concentration, giving the feeling of alertness and increased energy. It does this by blocking the action of adenosine, another psychoactive chemical. It is a chemical which is found throughout the body and is an important regulator of energy metabolism.

Caffeine grounds for concern
:glare:
Oh, great! I give up the drugs, give up all but the occasional drink, and I'm planning to give up the smoking. Caffein's my last vice, these yahoos want me to give it up, and luv1another is quoting silly puns at me!

After reading this thread, I suddenly had a craving for coffee. But as it is late, I am getting a cup of decaffenated.
Makes me wonder... What the heck is decaffenated coffee? If you take the coffee out of coffee what the blazes am I drinking?

I read the whole article. Sounded like a bunch of pseudoscience holistic mumbo jumbo to me.
Now, I must go get my morning cup of cofee.
For a true unbiased look at coffee, go to http://www.coffeescience.org/ run by coffee producers. They make coffee and so they wouldn't lie about it.

I gave up coffee about 2 months ago because it was killing my stomach. As far as caffeine goes, I also gave up my Coke :bawl: and now I only get a bit of caffeine through the little bit of caffeinated tea I drink.
I could use a Coke about now,

Now, every morning, before work and even on weekends, I drink and entire pot of not just regular coffee, but Cafe Bustelo, 4 overflowing scoops of espresso ground powder per 10 cups of water.
AND YOU KNOW WHAT.............. I WANT TO CONTINUE BEING AN ADDICT! I'M NOT READY TO STOP. I DID THAT ONCE, THE HEADACHE IS KILLER. I'M NOT STOPPING. I'M GOING TO CONTINUE TO DRINK MY VERY DARK, THICK, STRONG, TARRY ESPRESSO COFFEE. AND THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT! JUST TRY AND STOP ME.......... I LIKE MY COFFEE. DON'T ANYONE THINK YOU CAN TAKE IT AWAY WITHOUT A FIGHT.........:fight:

I'M NOT READY TO STOP. I DID THAT ONCE, THE HEADACHE IS KILLER.
Years ago I was drinking at least eight mugs of regular coffee per day at work. Then I started getting headaches at the weekend, which went away if I had a cup of coffee.
Aha! I thought, something going on here. Yup, caffeine withdrawal symptoms. I switched to de-caff and the headaches went away .... it only took a day or two as I recall. I still drink a lot of coffee, I really like the taste of it, even de-caff and black. Now, I'm so "off" caffeine that if I have any after around 5 pm I can't get to sleep.
Hmmm, time for another cup .... <wanders off to the kitchen> ....

No, cigarettes are your last vice until you've given up and stayed smoke-free for a couple of years.
Maybe I'm projecting. I finally did give up, but it took hypnosis, much to my chagrin. Still, in my case it was "whatever works" after 30 or so failed attempts.

Didn't God create the coffee bean ? I wasn't a coffee drinker until Starbucks. I just couldn't get into coffee until one day someone said try the toffee nut latte. I did and I ws hooked. I have at least 3 cups a week. At one point I had a cup a day . That's $3 plus times 7 times 4 = $84 a month on coffee. No wonder Starbucks is raking in the bucks. That's why I pulled back and would allow myself 3 a week. Some of my friends have one a day at least.

I just read something interesting here (http://jewishworldreview.com/cols/blonz1.asp):
For decades we have used the cold-water extract method for regular and decaf coffee; you soak a pound [of ground coffee] at a time for 12 or so hours, then filter the some 60 ounces of extract through a thick felt pad and add hot or ice water to the extract. This sharply reduces the astringent oils and acids, as no hot water ever touches the beans. You store the extracts in the refrigerator, in a non-metal container such as glass, and they stay in good condition for about a week. Before we leave for a weeklong business trip, we store the extract(s) in the freezer, which slows down the aging. Guests in our home uniformly comment on how "smooth" this coffee is ("coffee kickback" seems to be more related to those oils and acids than to caffeine).
[T]he people of Sweden had the highest longevity numbers in Europe by a small margin, and they drink coffee in far larger quantities than I ever could. And it wasn't high-quality coffee, either, as Sweden has long been a relatively poor country; the Swedes, even in America, typically saved about 1/4 of a day's used grounds to mix in with the next day's. This is not to claim that coffee contributes to longevity; rather, it raises the question that if coffee's so bad for you, how come the Swedish live so long when they drink so much of it?
Has anyone here had coffee made this way?

Has anyone here had coffee made this way?I routinely make cold brewed coffee for my wife, who has troubles with her stomach from the acid (presumably). It lacks some essential quality of "real" coffee, though.

How does one prepare it? The article I came across isn't quite specific enough.I got some rough information from the internet, but had to exeriment a bit to get it right. I do not prepare a full pound at a time, and only make enough for my wife to last for 3 or 4 days. I grind coffee to make the strength she likes, add two quarts of cold water and leave in the fridge for 24 to 48 hours. Then I run it through a filter and voila. Fairly simple.
