The International Mission Board is working especially in Sri Lanka and in Indonesia. A January report from them described how the organization is helping the tsunami relief effort. Funds from the International Mission Board’s Asia Earthquake Disaster Relief fund have provided school uniforms for children whose homes and clothes were destroyed. And they’ve given safe drinking water, food and shelter to Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and others. International Mission Board already had ministers relatively in place to help when the tsunami happened, making it easier for them to provide directly for the needs of the people. They have worked with people to provide food, eye glasses, medical care, etc. In little more than two weeks after the tsunami, local Christians distributed over three hundred Bibles as well as were talking and praying with the people. This opportunity to care for the needs of these people is also giving them a great opportunity to witness to and minister to these people.
Because of people who prayed, who gave, and who went themselves to serve in the afflicted areas, children have clean clothes, families have shelter, the sick have medicine, the hungry have food, the thirsty have water and the hopeless are hearing about Jesus. The actions of all who help show real faith and real love to those who were left in so much need. David Garrison, International Mission Board regional leader for South Asia, describes many who are involved when he says, “They serve as a face on the gospel to hundreds of thousands of people who are in need at this moment.” They can give no greater witness than this that these people could see than the love that they are shown by Christians because of Christ.
