Why causes them and is there some reason I might have a couple that I used to not have?

Freckels are tanned macules on the skin. They become more apparent with exposure to the sun, and they tend to increase in number into young adulthood and then decrease with old age.
Freckles are usually benign and you should not worry. If in doubt, you should consult your doctor or dermatologist.

I get new freckles all the time.
