Death metal can be quite theraputic. I put headphones on and crank up the volume, and all my problems get lost in the noise.:hehe: I don't think that's what you had in mind though.

obp :teeth:
you rock.
that's actually a lot closer to what i'm talking about than i want to admit...(gimme something classical or acoustic...nice and soft...with a gentle melody...)
of course, the object isn't to lose your problems, but to see them more clearly, see yourself more clearly, and be able to work through whatever troubles ya.
and of course...that's just one avenue of Music Therapy.
but ah, thanks for your response. nice to see ya, by the way.

Well, the school I did graduate work at (University of Kansas) has a strong music therapy program (I was involved in music education though, so sadly I don't know a whole lot about it). Here's a link to their site, maybe if you write or call them you can get some more information.

Yeah, you shouldn't run away from problems. I was referring more to breaking out of a pity party. Once I chase the depression away, I can think about things more objectively.

You're welcome! :offtopic: The french horn section of my high school band had an obsession with cows.

OK, wayyy off topic ... you play horn? I was a music major all through school and horn is my main instrument. Horn players are definitely a breed apart from other people

Actually, I played baritone horn. The french horns sat right in front of me, though.

Well its ok, we can still be friends  HOpefully the horns were good, since their bells were pointing right at your knees!

I do think music can be used as a healing tool. I.E. just recently I lost a best friend and my Husband knowing about me and music developed a cd with just the right songs on it, some that brought back the good memories some that showed exactly how I felt and why I enjoyed my friend which is helping through the greif process.
I also have a couple of songs that I have put on my permanent list since they help me put things in persepective.
Is this what you were thinking.

yes, that is definitely one aspect of Music Therapy! as a field of study, the object is to use music to promote and facilitate emotional, cognitive, physical, neurological (et cetera, et cetera, et cetera) health. it's such a broad topic, and i don't know enough about any one area yet. i do know, though, that i can testify to the same thing you and OBP are talking about--music that provides personal growth and healing and coping skills.
i'm considering Music Therapy as a college pursuit, which is why i brought it up. i'm interested in studying Music Therapy and going on to work in geriatrics and neurology...common old age dimentia, alzheimer's, short term memory loss, speech loss of stroke victims...things of that nature; all areas where Music Therapy has become an incredibly well-respected means of therapy.
anywho. thanks for your input, guys! and thanks for the link, tiffany! looks a lot like the Music Therapy program at the Michigan schools i've been looking at!
be blessed,

My acupuncturist uses tuning forks at each of the needle points near the end of each session. She raps them very softly, to produce a muffled vibration, rather than a ringing tone. Then, she holds them to each point. It's a gentle, subtle, and elegant treatment. I didn't notice much of a response at first, but now, I really appreciate the delicate effects on the qi.
