  • Classic mario retrospective

In only a few days, I will embark on an immense journey through the early days of the world's favorite plumber!

From Donkey Kong to Super Mario RPG, I will go in depth on the early history of the Mario franchise.

The good stuff, like the NES trilogy and Super Mario World? Covered.
The bad stuff, like Mario's Time Machine and Hotel Mario? Covered.
We'll even look at stuff that goes by the wayside, like Yoshi's Safari and Mario and Wario!

Just don't expect me to talk much about the cartoons. This is strictly games.

I'll see you on Sunday. Here's something to whet your appetite:

If there are any questions, speak now or forever hold your peace.

I actually kind of liked Mario's Time Machine when I was little.

I beat the original when I was 3 years old, it wasn't until I owned 3 that I got to beat it. I still need to beat 2.

So are you covering the 1980's version of Donkey Kong? Are you going to go into his game boy and game and watch appearances too?

The original 1981 version of Donkey Kong will be the first game I will talk about since it was the first game with Mario in it.
I will get to the sequels and Donkey Kong '94 when I get to them.

Also, Game & Watch games are exempt from this series.

So only the ones on arcades and consoles are going to be used on your series?

And you are right about Mario's Time Machine. Ugh, I remember we had that one and only played it once.

Donkey Kong '94 is on Game Boy, actually. There are also CD-ROM games on here, like Mario Teaches Typing.

I think of the Game Boy as a console myself.

That was very interesting. Especially the connection to Popeye. Mrs H grew up with a Colecovision set (which is still in our garage) and had both Popeye and Donkey Kong for it. Until now I never thought about how similar they were.
