View Full Version : Trouble Breathing from Right Nostril

I'm not sure what this means. Anyone give me some ideas?
Some pertinent data:
1. Whenever I get a nosebleed, it is always out of the left side, not the right. Ten years ago I would get daily nosebleeds that were very bad.
2. I am currently being screened for sleep apnea, I have all the symptoms of that including:
Wake up Gasping
Snore VERY loud
When I inhale deeply my right nostril completely collapses.
Ideas? Thoughts? I will be seeing a doctor about this next week.

 Hmm... I dunno about that. :nsm: I myself have a deviated septum, which makes it hard to breathe out my nose. I've never had it collapse on one side though. It is good you are having it looked at.

My dad used to get nose-bleeds a lot and the doctor said it was from polyps in his nose. He had these seen to and didnt get nose bleeds very much after that. So perhaps you might have something like that. Perhaps that is why only your right nostril collapses when you inhale deeply ie the left one has something physical in it keeping it from collapsing (assuming that by 'collapsing' you mean the nostril physically shuts because of the inward sucking motion of the air)

That's what I mean by "collapsing"... are the nostrils supposed to shut like that when you inhale? I can barely breathe out of the right nostril... dunno. Fortunately I'll be seeing a respiratory doctor in a week

Well, My only thought is that if you have a problem with your left nostril and it might not be facilitating flow of air at maximum capacity, then when you inhale deeply your right nostril is taking all the effort/pressure - which collapses it. If I inhale deeply through my nose, both sides in effect collapse, though not totally because there is still an open airway - there is a balance.
Anyway, seeing the doc should help alleviate concerns.....keep us posted?

are you overweight? The rise of obesity in the U.S. has given birth to a variety of sleep/breathing disorders...

I am overweight, way too overweight. Over the past 5 years I became reclusive and never ventured outside. This, coupled with a pre-existing eating disorder made me much too 'hammy,' if you catch my drift.
I don't think the sleep apnea is due to my weight, however, because my father and grandfather have/had it and they aren't/weren't obese. What it's from, I do not know. Hopefully the doctor appointment will shed some light on what's going on . . .

AH HA!!!!!!!!!!!
New Lead. I think it is either due to a deviated septum or .. dang, I forgot the name of the other part. The Terbinate or something to that effect.
The Septum is that part of the nose that divides the nostrils.
Why do we need two nostrils, anyways? If I have to go in for rhinoplasty I'm going to ask them for just one big wide-open nostril. I'm not looking for a spouse, anyways, I might as well be as pragmatic as possible.

When I had trouble breathing through my right nostril it was because at some point in the night I had managed to inhale a sock. You see, when the wife does laundry she sorts it on the bed and I had a sock mixed up in my pillow.
Once we pulled the sock out, I could breath just fine.

I don't even want to think about how large your nostrils are!
Anyway, wouldn't Gerbils and Hamsters have similar nasal issues?

Hammy, I have a friend that is doing a sleep study for apnea, and he is also obese. I can't remember all that he told me, but I do remember they have a treatment that is some sort of machine to cover the nose and maybe the mouth too. I'll ask to find out, I can't remember if it feeds oxygen or if it does something else.

You are refering to a CPAP machine. Very effective with sleep apnea.
http://www.webmd.com/hw/sleep_disorders/hw48752.asp
It provides constant air pressure which prevents the airway from collapsing. CPAP also require a humidifyer which attaches to the machine in order to prevent excessive dryness of the mouth/throat. Some come with a mask others with a mouth piece connected to the tube delivering the air pressure. It does not dispense O2.
Such machines are quite expensive. However, there are some available on E.Bay. If purchased on E.Bay, it is important to have a respiratory therapist do the calibration prior to using it.
