(It can be good for you, when in moderation of course.)
Coffee, tea, and chocolate have good benefits besides just giving a boost of energy. They share at times two surprisingly beneficial substances, caffeine and theobromine. Tea has these plus another chemical, theophylline. These are good for things like headaches, ADD, and asthma.
One kind of medicine for treating asthma is bronchodilators. Caffeine can actually produce the effects as a bronchodilator. Theobromine is a chemical that has been used as a bronchodilator in the treatment of asthma. Theobromine has a similar effect to caffeine. Theophylline has a strong effect in widening the airways. Its main action is to relax the muscles in the bronchi and improve efficiency of the diaphragm.
The stimulant effect of caffeine almost acts as a mild medicating in un-medicated individuals with ADD/ADHD. One explanation given with regards to hyperactivity for this is that the stimulation of the central nervous system results in the increases production of a neurotransmitter
Caffeine is used also to treat and in some cases prevent headaches and apparently to treat them. Excedrin, a brand of headache medicine sells a form that is basically acetaminophen and caffeine. With migraines, caffeine can be used to control some of the expanding and contracting of the blood vessels around the brain.
