I really want to know what the Assemblies of God denomination is like. Given my scenario...would I like a denomination like this one?

Theologically...I am mostly "wesleyan". I more closely agree with Arminianism than Calvinism. The A/G church is derived from pentacostalism. Personally, I greatly disagree with new-word/pentacostal movements. I don't agree with mass "tounges speaking", and I do not agree with "divine extra-biblical" (anti-biblical) messages.

What is the Assembly of God church like???

I do not have anything against people being led by the holy spirit...but are the A/G people excessively flambouyant in their charisma? Is it a "charismatic" denomination to the new-word/new-age/pentecostal definition of the word?

I do not really "agree with" super-charismatic denominations...and I want to know if the Assembly of God denomination would be something that I would not "agree with".

I basically do not think one should stifle the work of the holy spirit...but I do not think one should flaunt it either.

Would I like the Assembly of God?

I'm not asking if there would be a better denomination for a person like myself...I'm just wondering if I would like it.

Would a person like me think the assembly of God was full of raving loonies??

Would I think they are too charismatic??

Would I think they are theologically flawed??

What would a person like me think of the Assembly of God??

Hey Mandolin,

I grew up in the AG, and have many relatives involved with it, so I can tell you something about it. I would say they are a pretty conservative, evangelical church. They you usually have a mixed worship service (both traditional and contemporary) or multiple services to suit different people's taste's. The church I have the most experience with is Calvary Temple (now called Calvary Christian Assembly) in Seattle, WA. I wouldn't say that they are overly charismatic. People do sometimes speak in tongues during worship services. It is usually only 1 or 2 persons, and then someone translates. However its not like every service is required to have speaking in tongues. I have visited AG churches where there isn't even a hint of it.

So I would say conservative in Theology, but contemporary in Services. There's not a lot of ritual or ceremony. Pastor usually where a suit or shirt and tie.

I think they are more arminian than calvanist. Check out http://www.ag.org for their theology.

Anyway let me know if there anything more specific you would like to know.
