If it's anything like marmite then yes, it rocks. And yes, it's funny when people spread it on assuming it's like jam or something.

What is Vegemite?
It is the gunk you scrape out of the brewery pipes when they become clogged.
This is closer to being true than you might think.

I still couldn't find out what it is exactly.
Odd how nobody tells you what it is....
Is it a grain?
Is it meat?
Is it a dead rat?
I want to know exactly what the stuff is.

Marmite, and I presume vegemite as well, is the yeast extract left over from the brewing process. It's basically yeast crap. mmmm.... lovely.

Brewer's yeast is a good source of vitamin B, but live yeast tastes boring, it is poorly digested, and it can even strip vitamin B from the gut. Inactivated yeast lacks the disadvantages, but is still bland. The answer is autolysis: using the yeast's own enzymes to break it down.
Spent brewer's yeast is sieved to get rid of hop resins, and washed to remove bitter tastes. Then it is suspended in water at a temperature greater than 37 C with no nutrients: the yeast cells die, and vitamins and minerals leach out. Then the proteolytic (protein-splitting) enzymes take over, breaking the yeast proteins down into smaller water-soluble fragments, which also leach out.
The yeast cell membrane is unruptured during this time, and can be removed by centrifuging. The clear light brown liquid is then concentrated under a vacuum to a thick paste (the vacuum helps preserve flavours and vitamin B1, thiamine). It is seasoned with salt, and a small proportion of celery and onion extracts to increase the palatability.
Vegemite is sold in a range of sizes up to 910 gram (2 pound) jars, and in bulk in giant tins which must contain about 5 kg of the stuff. Only sissies buy anything less than a 227 gram jar.

Worked with an Aussie for awhile....back when the "I come from a land down under" song was big we asked her what Vegemite was. She explained it as something parents fed their kids until enough tastes buds were killed off so that it tasted good.
(She also explained that overeating of vegemite led to potential chundering...another of the references in the song we had questions on.)

Of course I'll have to try some.
Me?
I have spinach, a banana, walnuts and soy milk in a blender for breakfast every morning so I'll eat anything.

LOL Gerbil, your breakfast shake reminds me of something the youth pastor at my church did once. He's always doing crazy things in his Wednesday night class, one time he had a contest to see who could drink their shake the fastest, the winner got points for their team. Of course my brother voluteers, the shake consisted of V8, M&Ms, jars of baby spinach, and I think bananas and some other stuff... My brother downed his and then proceeded to drink what was left in the blender. (That was his version of the story, but the youth pastor did confirm that's what happened so I guess my brother really will eat anything.)
Anyway, vegemite, yeah, some missionaries visiting our church had a small jar of it for people to see, we were smelling it and it didn't smell that bad actually. I've never eaten any though. I think there may be a place around here where I can get some, I'll be surprised if I don't find it here seeing as I live in a rather culturally diverse city. People who've had both marmite and vegemite, do they taste about the same?
{Tim}, I'll keep that pizza sauce thing in mind. The only thing I can make decently besides pancakes, salsa, and banana bread is pizza. (Although that last batch of salsa verde came out quite badly. I wonder what went wrong...? )

okay, I had to go and find out what a tim tam was and this is the site (http://about-australia-shop.com/timtams.htm) that googled up first.
Reading through the serving ideas - most of which sounded great - I come across the "slam". Is that for real, as a common way to eat the biscuts - or is it just something the people putting the site together thought up? I'd think you'd strain a blood vessel or two trying to use a cookie as a "straw". Just wondering.

Guess I shoulda kept on looking at websites before posting. Looks like the "Tim Tam Slam" is not just common, but according to some the only real way to eat the things.
I'll have to check out the little shop I get my "Penguins" at to see if they carry "Tim Tams". Any helpful hints to first time slammers?

oh yes the only way to eat Tim tams is to suck your coffee or milo through them :teeth: that is the best way to eat them it is messy though
most people bite opposite corners off of the tim tam so one orner then go to the opposite other corner (the long side) and bite it off them put one bittne corner into beverage and suck warning the biscuit(cookie) will melt which maks it yummy so be prepared to catch it before it falls in :hehe:
actually tim tam slam is an art form.
my way of doing it is I get my bottom teeth and make like a cut in the bottom off the tim tam on one short end (in the centre of the short end) and one on the opposite side and suck
it's messy but fun

Gee, for Aussies, some of you guys are soft - biting the corners off??? The only way to Tim Tam slam is to use hot milo and bite the whole of each end off, not just the corners. You then hold the Tim Tam in your teeth (no hands allowed), and to successfully complete the slam you must suck the hot milo thru until your mouth is full, and then throw your head back without wearing the by now soaked Tim Tam down your shirt. For those dedicated to the art of food and beverage experimentation, try shotgunning Coke instead of beer. Don't get hammered, and the resultant belches can be nothing short of frightening...

The coke thing only works with cans, real Ozzers only drink 600 ml cokes or higher capacity. NO Australian would ever substitute coke for beer in any case.

I just tried the Tim Tam Slam today, it was fun so I did it twice! I was able to do it without too much of a mess, too. Before I tried it I tried to explain it to my sister, she stared at me as if I had broken out of the nut house and was explaining just why the grass had turned neon orange after the aliens came.
I can't drink coffee so I drank Chai with it, I hope that's not some kind of sacrilege...
I actually couldn't go to the shop to get the Tim Tams and Vegemite myself, so I sent my Mum and the guy at the shop was describing Tim Tams to her, and she said "Oh, like a Penguin" and he said "Yeah, that's what I normally tell people". So I wonder if you can try the same thing with Penguins? That's what we normally get. Although I think Penguins are a little more dense, I'll try it later and see if it works...
P.S. I still haven't tried the Vegemite, I think I'll try it with breakfast tomorrow. I'll let ya know.

I just tried the vegemite on some buttered toast, and I like it! I think it's really an acquired taste but I think I'm already well on my way to loving it. :thumb:
P.S. I can't try the "slam" with a Penguin since we don't have any Penguins right now, I'll have to wait until we go to the shop where we get our British tea biscuits and candy.
Yesterday we had a British friend over and we were discussing Tim Tams vs. Penguins. I asked whether she thought someone could drink tea through a Penguin, and she said that the British are too civilized to try it.

I would think you'd burst a blood vessel trying to drink through a Penguin. I havent' found any Tim Tam's yet (I've looked) - so I don't know if they are any shorter, but a Penguin is a bit long and dense to try to suck up a drink through. You might find yourself passed out on the floor for lack of oxygen.

The Penguins and Tim Tams are pretty much the same size, only Tim Tams are thicker because they are lighter, more airy. Penguins are denser of course, but you might could still drink through it. I still haven't tried it, there's no telling when I'll get around to buying more Penguins...
