Glory Seed Devotionals, 2015: Year of Promise
Depending on God…
“Trust God, my friends, and always tell him each one of your concerns. God is our place of safety. We humans are only a breath; none of us are truly great. All of us together weigh less than a puff of air. Don’t trust in violence or depend on dishonesty or rely on great wealth.” (Psalm 62:8–10, CEV)
There are times when reading the bible I scratch my head and wonder, “What this all about?” I was okay with the first and last sentence in this morning’s reading. “Trust God, my friends, and always tell him each one of your concerns. God is our place of safety… Don’t trust in violence or depend on dishonesty or rely on great wealth.” But those two middle sentences, “We humans are only a breath; none of us are truly great. All of us together weigh less than a puff of air,” tripped me and down I went wondering, “Is that what God really thinks about me? How can I be encouraged by them?”
Immediately I was challenged to go deeper, to try to understand not just the words but their hidden message as well. But in order to understand them I needed to study them from start to finish not just in broken segments. “Trust God, my friends, and always tell him each one of your concerns. God is our place of safety. We humans are only a breath; none of us are truly great. All of us together weigh less than a puff of air. Don’t trust in violence or depend on dishonesty or rely on great wealth.”
After reading them a couple of times on the third try it seemed like all the words after, “Trust God,” disappeared and in their place the message came through to me loud and clear and it wasn’t about me at all. It wasn’t about not being great, about not being less than a puff of air, it was about depending totally not on myself and the world around me but on God.
As I think about my life and all it has put me through I can honestly say God has gone to great lengths to get me to the point where I depend on him totally. And I am quick to admit my dependence on him but my dependence does not make me helpless. God gives us what we need such as encouragement, hope, faith, courage, and the trust to face the challenges of each day but God does not face them for us that’s our responsibility.
From one puff of air to another let us move through our day depending and trusting in God and God alone.
Anticipate! Experience! Believe! Be transformed!
Grace and PEACE, Amen!
