Hi all,
If you have to give a four, 1 hour lectures on an overview of church history over the last 2000 years, what sort of things do you think you would put in them ?

Boy, do I feel bad for you -- church history is hard enough to cover in one-hour lectures, let alone only four. Though I don't feel quite exemplary enough to really spread things out, I would say you should at least incorporate the following:
Discovering of the Truth: Working out Doctrine in the First 4 Centuries
Governing with the Truth: Church and State Relations betwen 500-1200 AD
Fighting for the Truth: The Social Underpinings of the Reformation
Proclaiming the Truth: The Awakenings of the Modern American Church
Hopefully this gives interesting ideas to you!!! :thumb:

I'll post the notes when I have them.
Incidentally, it is intended to be a really general overview of the history of the Church, not in any real detail. Just to give people a feel for it if they don't really have one yet.
My break down was similar to yours, although I like some of the title you offered better.
I had
The early church (Acts -> Edit of Milan)
The Imperial Church (Constantine -> The Schism)
The Seeds of the Reformation (The Schism -> John Huss 'ish)
The Reformation
The Englihtenment (Or perhaps more accurately The Endarkenment ).
I was going to call the whole thing, Church History A to E
A to E being Acts to the Enlightenment. I like your titles (except the last one, I am an Australian ), may Ipinch them ?

Hi Jason,
It depends on whether they are strictly educational lectures, or whether it was an overview for the benefit of lay people sitting in pews. Others have commented concerning the educational side...
If I was (as I have been) asked to do 4 of 1 hour talks giving an overview of church history to the pews, I would concentrate on areas of church history which were most pertinent to todays issues and challenges. Martin Luther said something along the lines of "if we don't speak on the issues which are challenging us today, then we are wasting our time" (totally and completely paraphrased, and drawn from secondary sources who were also paraphrasing) :ahem:
If I've picked up your initial question incorrectly, just ignore me, I'll go back and lay down... "Nurse, bring me my big dusty book...."
Cheers
John
