About one year ago, I stumbled upon an advertisement in newsmax on an exercise program named "Combat Conditioning," a calistenics program developed by Matt Furey, a former collegiate champion wrestler. The ad noted that heavy weight training results in injuries and loss of flexibility. This program promised to increase flexibility and strength simultaneously, as well as endurance, and conveniently all in the privacy of your own home. Intrigued, I ordered the book and started the exercises. The core three exercises are referred to as "The Royal Court." These work the entire body from head-to-toe. Initially, they were tough exercises and I could only muster a few repetitions even though I had been weight training for years. Gradually, however, my strength and flexibility improved. I added additional exercises described in the book and formed a daily routine. I noticed my endurance had dramatically improved when I hiked an uphill, five mile mountain trail at elevations over 7000 feet. I walked at a brisk pace and had none of the fatigue or soreness I expected to get. Since starting the program, I have cut out all weight training and gym memberships, but plan on incorporating a full body weight training routine once weekly to supplement the conditioning program with the weight set I have in my garage.
I highly recommend the program. It is unlike any program I have seen. It is especially good for those suffering from back stiffness and soreness. Matt claims that many have written him saying that the pain is gone. I believe him. Many of the exercises stretch and strengthen muscles along the spine. To those interested, here is the website: www.mattfurey.com. Read the testimonials and decide for yourself if it is for you.
As an additional note, I would suggest adding pullups/chins to your routine every other day. These are absent in the book.
