Hi all, I hope this is the right place for this otherwise one of the mods will move it!!
This is my q - what was the culture, normal practice, even history surrounding alcohol and wine in Bible times?
Please not a discussion on alcohol itself but the culture surrounding it.

Mostly, for the same reasons that people drink it now, becuase it tastes good. But the fact that water was often a vector for disease like Cholera and the like people noticed that if they drank wine or beer they did not get sick as often nay have influenced them.

As for the origins of wine and beer, noone knows with any certainty, but Beer was a staple in prebible Egypt. But most cultures claim that they invented Alcohol.

It seems that humans like geting drunk, to some extent. Is that what you were looking for?

Alchohol itself until recently was considered a staple in most cultures as before refrigeration it was one of the few sterile foods a person could eat. The Romans lived off of dried corn and wine, the germans off of Ale and game. It was an important addition to the table not only because of the fact it could be kept for extended periods but because it often gave nutrients that could not be gotten easily in winter months or droughts. Beer actually saved western civilization because of a severe lack of untainted drinking water sources in Europe.
