Assalamu alaikum [السلام علايكم],

Aisha [عائشه "she who lives"] was a wife of the Islamic prophet Muhammad [محمد ] (PBUH صلى الله عليه وسلم). There are several hadiths [الحديث], said to have been narrated by Aisha herself, claiming that she was 6 or 7 years old when betrothed and 9 when the marriage was consummated.

What is the current Islamic teachings or a fatwa [فتوى] concerning Aisha’s age when her marriage was consummated? Can you cite readily available or online “fatwa’’ indexes or databases? If you cannot, can you give the Hadith or Sunnah [سنة] referenced in the Fatwa?

Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh [السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركته]

A fatwa isn't really the right word for the question you're asking. A fatwa is an answer given by a mufti in response to a legal question about some aspect of Islamic law. Eg. Is the meat of crocodiles halal? An answer on a question of historical truth is not a fatwa.

Having said that, there is an interesting perspective on the question of 'A'isha's age up at: http://www.understanding-islam.com/related/text.asp?type=question&qid=375
