View Full Version : Do we mourn enough? or do we laugh?

Matt 5:4 says "Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted."

Jesus said this when He preached His famous sermon on the mount. When He says mourning, He is talking about the mourning over sin. All my life I have thought that the verse mostly meant that I should mourn over my own sin. But recently this verse took a new meaning to me.
I applied it to my life and realized how much I laugh at sin and that I should stop. Laughing at something that Jesus died to save us from is a foolish and thankless thing.
Laughing at sin has infiltrated society. So many Christians laugh at sin and preachers sometimes poke fun at sin. Think of mainstream comedies today, they are filthy and yet we laugh at them.
So think about the object of your humor and what makes you laugh.

This is so true! The Bible also warns us about coarse joking in proverbs 26. We are supposed to be walking like Jesus but do you really think that Jesus would mock the sin that he died for? We take for granted (sometimes subconsciously) that He died for our sins and now are forever cleansed/liberated from all sins. Teenagers often hide behind what "society" considers as funny or morally correct. But since when did Jesus ever conform to what society thought? He knew better and I think that's why the Bible warns us about joking. We mock what we profess to oppose. Not all joking is wrong but we need to be careful how far it gets.

Im not sure this belongs in philosophy.....

But a great topic nonetheless.

I have a hard time reducing "blessed are those who mourn..." to just those who are saddened by sin. I see this as a 'reversal of fortune' saying, much like the parable of the rich man and Lazerus in Luke 16. That is not to say your application is incorrect, just that it is perhaps too narrow of scope.

To me, it seems as though we are unsatisfied in even laughing at other people's sin/mocking others plight, but want so badly to exuse our obvious transgressions with a forced chuckle in the chruches (prosperity without sacrifice, insular and clique-ish congregations each member within the perameter of the acceptable demographic, etc., exchanging the reality of being a family of God by the sacrifice of the Son, to a social club where everyone has to hide behind the laughing theatrical mask or face becoming a pariah, 'charity' without true compassion)

But hey, its so much easier to point out the faults of others and other churches/faiths than at ourselves. The only way to cure the gangrenous effects of mockery and coarse joking and open the way to revival is taking the log out of our own eye....

If we did that we could help take the speck out of our brother's and not be merely the entertained spectator of the World watching it fall into the pit while we are in stitches and slapping our knees....
