View Full Version : Do you drink Alcoholic beverages or not?

I like beer.
In fact, I am quite dubious of any man who does not indulge the ales, beers, and lagers... :hrm:

Although drunkeness is clearly forbidden in Ephesians 5:18, I see no exegetical warrant for banning all drinking in moderation.
I really don't see a distinction between drinking alcohol and eating, say, candy. The glutton and the drunk are sinners alike.

Keep in mind that the alcohol back then was way watered down.
That having been said, there is no Biblical warrant for completely forbidding alcohol, although drunkenness or addiction are clearly wrong. As for uses of wine, just look at the last supper, or Paul's command to Timothy, Melchizedek and Abraham, or Wisdom's party. Abstinence was opposed because ascetism resulted from the dualistic view (yay, Gnosticism) of anything physical as pure evil.
Colossians ii, 20-23: "Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, (touch not; taste not; handle not; which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh."
I Timothy iv, 1-5: "Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer."
I'm too young to drink... I doubt I would even if I could.

Heck, I'm toasted right now!!:duh: :eww: :wtg: I need to do something to fill in the quiet hours at bible college.
Actually, although I'm not much for getting smashed, I do go in for the occasional pint of Guinness or Newcastle. Mostly the former though. What can I say? It must be the Irish in me.

Amen!!! One of the best Islay Malts ever!!! I also like beer, ale, lager and other Malt Whiskys (proper Scotch, none of this Jack Daniels/Jim Beam rubbish ;)). Drambuie is also a nice Scotch-based liquer.
Obviously, I don't think that the Bible bans alcohol, though I believe it may be wrong for some people (former alcoholics, others whom God tells to give it up).
God bless

I do not drink... it is not because I believe it is forbidden by the Bible, but I know that even after one drink, I get "different" and certainly not in complete restraint of what may come out of my mouth. I need to be in complete soberness to follow the maxim, "Not everything that pops in your mind Dee Dee needs to come out of your mouth."

I don't need beeer to misspell anything on these boards.
1. I can't type.
2. There is no spell checker.
3. I am not careful about proofing my comments, everytime.
I was just thinking on the way home from PT this morning that I was going to start be more careful about my posts...

I never drink alcohol.
The reason being, that in my old days, I rarely drank, either (I used to like other stuff ;) ) I hate the taste of any kind of alcohol- I've never liked it, and only drank it before to get wasted (although I had to slam it because it tastes gross).
I don't have any problem with others drinking in moderation, though. I don't think it is a sin or anything, as long as it is in moderation.

I do not drink. As a minister of the Gospel I believe I need to be above reproach "in all things"--as Christ gives strength.
I have no problem if other believers want to partake.

I drink occasionally. I enjoy it quite a bit which is why I try to temper myself. There's a history of alcoholism in my family so I've seen what it can do to people.
But I still enjoy a good stiff drink among friends.

I drink all of the above. In moderation of course.
My favorite beer is Caffrey's Irish. It's hard to find in the states but is well worth the search. It settles like a Guiness but is not as dark.
I also love a good single malt scotch. In fact, I think I'll pour myself a bit of Balvenie right now. (Though I prefer the Glen Morangie 15 year)
Peace,

Oh and Smilax, you said the alchohol back then was more watered down? I don't think so. The fermentation process was the same. We had this conversation on another board and the evidence presented seem to indicate just the opposite.

I have never had a drink nor will I. Drinking kills brain cells, and as anyone who has met me can tell, my brain is my only "selling" point.
That said, my wife drinks, and I only beat her every other time for it.

If your brain is so big why did you bail out of the Infant baptism thread after you told me I used Calvin instead of the Greek text?

Yeah, drinking is over-rated in today's culture, but not a sin. Only drunkenness is a sin, and is to drinking what gluttony is to food. Don't really like most of the stuff, except sweet fruity wine and flavorsome liqueurs. I have no patience for claims that Jesus turned water into grape juice etc. :duh:

I was on an army deployment to the philippenes, at a local karaoke bar, after a long hot and hard day of backbreaking labor, knocking a couple of longnecks back of one of the local fare, brooding about my circumstances, feeling very lonely and homesick (married only 4 weeks before), I heard someone ask, "What are you doing?"
Now, I dont know if it was from the lyrics of the song that was being sung by, from one of the boisterous revelers beside me, something i thought aloud or the voice of God. But I was forced to admit that i didnt know. I had a realization that this is probably how my dad felt when he was on deployment so long ago (and he became an alcoholoic, btw) and I thought of my mom, who suffered so greatly as a result, and I thought of my bride, full of hope and sparkle and dreams . And i stood up and walked away, resloved to not have any alcohol at least for the time being.
The time i had been spending goofing off at the enlisted club and other places, i spent at the mess tent, reading the bible from cover to cover. The amazing thing about it was that people seemed to be instantly and oddly attracted to this , and before i knew it I had people left and right asking me questions about the bible and christianity and reading the bible with me etc. (I would be embarrassed now if i heard some of my simple answers now, i fear)
Anyway, i see now that for me and alcohol the principle of "anything not done in faith is sin" applies. The sin of my fathers (I have done a little probing of my ancestry and im fairly sure that alcoholism stretches all the way back to Cain  ) visited upon me, but I have trusted on Christ not to be guilty of it and perpetuate (even potentially) such an awful 'curse'
To those who can, I say cheers, but make mine a birch beer!
Ciao! :thumb:

I like the occasional beer or vodka on the rocks. Personally, I don't feel anything is "wrong" with a drink. I believe alcoholism or drinking for the sake of drunkeness are sinful and just plain wrong. But I do not find an occasional social drink to be a damnable offense.
