Has anyone ever read Thomas a Kempis' classic devotional The Imitation of Christ? I just picked up a copy at a discount book store the other day and was wondering what I've gotten myself into. The blurb on the back praises the book as the "second-most beloved book about Christianity of all time" (after the Bible, of course).
Anyone read through it? What am I in store for?

Hello. Yes I have read it once and perused it many times since.
It is a classic and was the standard devotional for over 500 years.
Many great writers quote A'Kempis in their works.
You will see it now that you are familiar with him.
I rank this book in my Top 5 All Time Favorites ATF's
My only disagreement with him is over communion. He put a whole lot of preparation into it because being Catholic I suppose he believed he was literally partaking the body and blood of Jesus. He believed there was grace to be achieved by partaking in communion. So those writings toward the end of the book that concern commuion were interesting but i didn't take em' seriously. I did appreciate the attention to detail and the desire honor communion. It was beautiful to read how for many days prior he and others would mortify themselves. It reminded me of Leviticus in a sense.
Nevertheless the book is a must read in my opinion.
Tell me what you think of it when you have read it.
Thanks
Cal
