Memorizing Scripture

Now this is my personal passion and crusade. I am a large advocate of the memorization of Scripture. I remember the Bible Answer Man saying that when he first became a Christian he began to memorize Scripture because he just assumed that is what all Christians did and that by the time he realized that most Christians don't, he was hooked.

I have found my studies remarkably enhanced by this practice. It all started when I was trained in Evangelism Explosion which does require the memorization of several dozen verses with addresses, and with my work the Youth Ciris Hotline of 1-800-HIT-HOME. There a young girl there who kept repeating this verse, and it became my mission statement for why we memorize Scripture:

Psalm 119:11 - Your Word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against You.

I encourage everyone I can to start with that verse as your mission statement and proceed from there. Since that time (I have been practising this discipline for about 5 years) I have memorized hundreds of verses, many Psalms, and the entire Book of Romans.

You can do it too. There is nothing special about me or my memory. And if you do, I guarantee your Christian walk and life will be immeasurably enriched.

DrD - I have certain memory tricks of my own that help me with certain phrases (especially lists) but yes, other than that, simple rote memorization.

Memorization of Holy Scripture is vital. Nearly two decades ago when I surrendered to the Lord Jesus Christ, I began memorizing Scripture--hundreds of them. It has helped me in sharing the Gospel and defending the faith when I didn't have a New Testament handy.

You Saints are right! I will return to this practise. In the early 80's I was memorizing scripture. And one of them was Psalm 119:11. A good portion of those are in me still. Plus the zeal I had and the fellowship were naturally enducive to memorizing the scriptures important to us. I recall even getting a newsletter every month from Oregon (when I was in Guam) that always included the monthly batch of cut out cards for that months list of scriptures to remember.

Dee Dee? the ENTIRE letter of Romans? How did you do that?:o

Do you know of any method that is popular for a plan of attack, or just go were one is compelled to go? I was thinking of starting with that 1 Cor 15 section and that Ephesians section.

As it is for our second batter of exams in this community college police academy we were told in the memo that we had to memorize the 4th amendment verbatim. So I hear the courts take a very dim view of unreasonable searches and seizures. :bonk:

Augustime once heard someone reading the book of Romans out loud, when he went to see who it was he found out that the guy was blind!

I cannot even articulate how much my understanding of Scripture has been enriched just by memorizing that one book. It is amazing. Romans has a special place in my heart for I was converted hearing a sermon on Chapter 1. I just sat there, and it was like a thunderbolt from the blue, and I thought, "I have bene an idiot for most of my life." Now I am not saying that all unbelievers are idiots, I am merely stating my own self-assessment at that point in my own sceptical arrogance and pride.

A story out of my tradition is of a monk who was awakened in his cell by a dream of lust. He got off his mat, and stood in the dark and recited the entire psalter, finishing in time to attend morning services...

There were no more such dreams for him...
