Ok probebly been asked before but since i'm new please humor me.
What did Jesus mean when he said that he came not to bring peace but a sword?

It means that his coming is going to cause a lot of fighting between those that believe in him and those that don't. He'll be the reason for a lot of conflicts. And boy was he right. :wink:

Now you see i thought that was the answer. so why do you want to follow a chap that is actuallly wanting to cause grief between people?

I don't think it was so much his intention but the natural cause of those who believe in Him... He seemed to be stating simple fact that division of ideology will cause problems even among close family members...
The grief is often a tool for a personal testimony... i.e. because of the difference and the struggle the believer gets an opportunity to share the message of the Bible with the person who they are divided against...
I may be off on the above points... but I think they're at least close..
