In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.
Is this as straightforward as it seems? If we are in a tight spot (say) and we don't have any idea what to pray for, we just know that we need something, can we just ask God for help in general and will the Holy Spirit actually 'pray' for us for what he knows we need? (Note that I'm not advocating laziness here.)

Yes, I think it means exactly that... Like Christ saying that God knows what we need before we ask...

It could be a minor point, but I must note that the Holy Spirit knows what is God's will for our need and so prays that way, and that there is much more other meaning in it also. Like being good to give to those who doubt the personhood of the Spirit.

Wellllllll...............
Look - You ARE in a tight spot. You live in a world of pleasure and pain inflicted upon the body you have that will die, and the only cure is to enter relationship with God through His Son. And in your weakness, you do not know what it is that is necessary for you to pray for. Nobody does, except the mature in the faith.
So for beginners, there are a lot of prayers that are given to be prayed daily, and even throughout the day, and into the night, for one's own prayers are pretty much just emotional mush, yet one is emparking upon the path to maturity. And in this regard, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us to God for our salvation, even if we pray badly, as we will, and thus rewards us for the effort we make to pray, while acknowledging our weakness in prayer.
It is the prayers of the righteous man that avail much, yet our unworthy prayers can often find a landing at the doorstep to the ear of God if given in a good heart that is found worthy by the Holy Spirit, the Searcher of hearts...
So no, it is not plain as YOU are seeing it - As in, "I am tied to the track and the train is coming, and I need help, and all I can do is pray..." But in the matters of salvation of one's soul, we have an advocate who searches our hearts and intercedes for us to God, and that advocate is the comforter, the Spirit of Truth...
