View Full Version : Walking and Swelling Hands?

It's the weirdest thing. I just started a walking regimen and I noticed the last couple of nights that my hands and fingers are swelling while I walk. It goes away shortly after I get home - even though I don't usually sit down right away. I got it to stop a bit by holding up my hands tonight when I noticed. It doesn't hurt (well, not really) but it's just so weird. Anyone else ever have this problem?

Do you swing your arms when you walk? Centripetal force doesn't actually take all that much movement. :teeth:

Yep, I do... tried pumping my arms as well - no noticable difference...

I used to get it when backpacking. Just extra blood and fluids or something like that flowing into the hands. You might try raising your hands and moving them, while you walk if you let them down at your sides. After particularly long hikes it would sometimes have discomfort near the end if I was generally leaving them down and gently swinging them in motion with walking. But all in all not a big problem.

yup yup, that's all i got. I remember the first time it happened while i wa shiking and my hands were just throbbing with each heart beat and my hands looked big and puffy, but after looking at them it went away and all was well.

Are you retaining water because you are not drinking enough? If you are exercising more than before you must increase your water intake.

yeah teal I have been having that I started walking about 6 weeks ago and my hands swell slightly and go kinda numb feeling... I take a bottle of water with me now and switching it between hands now and again seems to help or maybe it's drinking it but its not happening as bad now

Looks like it's the water - I tried drinking more before leaving and it did much better tonight... :thumb:
Thanks everyone!
