1. Right click on My Computer and go to Manage.
2. Click the + next to Services and Applications
3. Select Services
4. In the right pane, double-click Messenger
5. Click the stop button and change startup type to Manual
6. Click OK

And you're done.

This is, of course, all contingent on running Win2K or WinXP.

That's highway robbery! Just shut it down or block the ports it uses.

People charge for that? :hrm:

I just fished around in the services screen and figured it out after about 15-20 minutes.

You realize you could just go into Windows Messenger window. Click Options >
Preferences >
uncheck:
Run this program when Windows starts
Allow this program to run in the background

That'll do it free of charge.

I got that web site name from a Messenger popup...

"Do you hate these popup ads? Go to www.byebyeads.com now! Write down this web site! Clicking OK will not take you to www.byebyeads.com!"

That's a different program, the MS Messenger (pre-XP) IM client. This is the Windows Messenger service, originally intended for network printers to notify you when print jobs are done, and for network admins to announce network shutdowns and the like.

I think you are referring to MSN Messenger, which isn't the same thing.

I like messenger service, I got an mass-port tester and found thousands of IPs with that open. Spam away, baby! :teeth:

Getting back to Windows Messenger, that didn't help me. :hrm: I would always go in and tell it not to run; it runs anyway! So frustrating.

But here's something you can do, if you kill off all instances, and rename the messenger folder; it will never run again!

Anyone know if 2000 Pro has the windows messenger ? Before XP Pro I had 2000 Pro, and I don't recall having that nifty little program.

Messenger service is in Win2kPro, but MSN Messenger(renamed Windows Messnger) was not built into Win.

2000 and XP both have it. It's ostensibily another way to report messages to workstations in a corporate environment. In practice, it's just more ways to get spammed.

Either way it took up so much ram and often time I would have to wait for it to calm down to log into my computer, but since disabling it (again) I haven't ahd that problem.
