This is how I make animated avatars

Please note that when I am taking screenshots PowerDVD's screen will be black. In reality there is a movie there. Unfortunately one cannot take screenshots with the print scrn function and have a video show up. I do not know why.

These are the things that you need.1. Jasc Animation Shop
2. Power DVD
You might be able to use different programs then the above, but those are what I use.

The first thing you want to do is start up Power DVD.

Go to the Scene that you want to grab.

Make sure that PowerDVD is the active window and hit "C". This will grab the frame. However, hitting C also clears your clipboard.

[attachment=1]

Go to Animation shop and hit CTRL+V -- this pastes the screenshot into animation shop. If, however, nothing appears, just repeat the above steps. Remember that hitting C also clears your clipboard. So just go back to PowerDVD and hit C one more time to capture instead of clear.

[attachment=2]

Return to PowerDVD. Now hit "T".. this will make the movie advance by a couple frames. Hit "C" to capture the new advanced frame.

[attachment=3]

Return to Animation Shop. DO NOT PASTE THE SCREENSHOT YOU JUST GRABBED YET. Highlight the frame that is already there and press CTRL+SHIFT+L. This will make the second screenshot appear AFTER the first one. You can also right-click to find this option as shown below.

[attachment=4]

You now basically have a two step animation. Keep repeating these steps until the animation is as long as you like.

Now we are going to do the editing.

Find the part of the animation that you really want. For example, you may want a character's face but not the whole animation. Select the cropping tool and crop the animation. All the frames will crop at the same time, so you don't have to worry about cropping them all

[attachment=6]
Now we have the part of the animation that we want rather than the whole scene.

Now we need to resize it so that it works by the TheologyWeb avatar size limitations.

Press SHIFT+S this will cause a dialogue screen to come up. Make sure that the animation is 120x120 or less.

[attachment=7]

Save the Animation. The Animation Must be under 40k in order for it to work.

You will get a dialogue screen that says Animation Quality Versus Output Size. You can adjust how many colors the animation will have. The less colors = the smaller the file. Don't make the colors too scant or your animation will come out ugly or weird.

Save the File.

Voila. Animated Avatar!

Here comes the dumb guy with the first question. :hehe:

I'm typing "C" but it's not working. I typed it twice too. I try pressing "ctrl + V" into IrfanView and it won't paste. :nsm:

Is PowerDVD the active window? Also, different versions of PowerDVD and different DVD software have different shortcut commands. What are you using?

Version 5.3.1012 of PowerDVD

I tried the "c" and the "ctrl + C" as well as shortcut commands.

On the control panel do you see a button that looks like a camera? That should grab the screenshot. You might also try a couple different skins to see if that camera button shows up.

just a note. if you are playing a DVD with certain copy protection built in it will not let you screengrab it.

That's of the devil.

Yar. There be software out thar that can bypass this problem but it is probably not appropriate to mention it here, even though it would be used for legal purposes only, eh?

ARR.

I have never encountered any DVD that would not let you take a screencapture... As far as I know it only exists so that you can't burn a copy of the DVD. A screencapture should be easy. I know you can't get a screencapture with PRNT SCRN but PowerDVD captures screens quite easily.

Cup, can you take a screenshot of your Power DVD toolbar/control panel thingy? Do you know how to do that with PRNT SCR?

Here it is. I don't really know how to change skins.

Right click on the screen and select "Configuration"

[attachment=1]

You will see a tab called "Skins" -- click it -- from there you can select a skin, probably even the one that I am using which will be helpful because then you can find the capture button (looks like a camera) :smile:

I am using Power DVD Version 4 so some of the buttons/commands might be slightly different.

Dude I keep right clicking everywhere and nothing comes up. I am horrible at this. Sorry for all the trouble.

Piebald
October 10th 2005, 10:27 PM
It's no trouble :smile:

It's just hard to help when you are not there in person. Did you try right-clicking on the metallic-looking console part rather than just the screen? Basically you need to get into configuration.. there should be SOME way for you to get into configuration...

Yeah it is hard, can you come over or something? :hehe:

I did click the metallic thing. I clicked everything LOL.

Try messing around with the buttons. Also, you shouldn't have your PowerDVD screen maximized, that just makes it harder. You WILL find that configuration menu eventually.

I'm speaking to Dee Dee in Paltalk IM about how crazy PowerDVD is about capturing frames.

The same button (or pressing C) alternates between

1. Capture a Frame
2. Clear the Clipboard (forget any captured frames)

So if you go to press "Capture" While it happens to be on 2, you will not get your frame captured.

This drove me NUTS until I realized what it was doing.

To know if you have successfully captured a frame, when you go into animation shop, you will see this:

[attachment=1]

If it is grayed out then you do not have a frame to paste. Simply return to PowerDVD and hit the capture button/tap "C" ONE more time, as it should now be on "1 (Capture A Frame)" rather than "2 (Clear the Clipboard)"

Hammy, you can't leave me hanging like this! I think I figured out one of your tricks, which I might not explain very well. I find that the DVD program is inconsistent a bit with the forward frame and the backward frame. For some I got better results if I found the frame I wanted to end with, and then I went frame back and pasted the capture before the current frame. Another trick is to experiment between the front and back frames. IOW sometimes you find the "middle" frame by hitting forward and then back and you decide whether to insert it before or after the current animation frame. I used that technique with my current avatar

Thanks JP - (note though that the first one on this page was done by Hamster) but my current one was done by me. I am keeping a thread on all the ones I have done here (http://www.theologyweb.com/campus/showthread.php?t=64817)

My current though is my fave - it is definitely freaky

I have noticed that weird bug with the frame-forward/frame-back as well. The weird thing is that I have become so accustomed to it that I can't even describe the process that I use to get around it. :huh:

Yeah I noticed that backward thing right away too when I was trying to get back to a frame I mistaken brushed past. It is somewhat of a dance you have to do to do that.

Hey Hamster, would a program like Fraps work with this? Or does it absolutely have to be the DVD software?

Update: it does work with fraps.
