I'm new here, so if this has been discussed before, sorry about that.

Have any of you ever read Frank Herbert's marvelous Dune books? I just finished God Emporer of Dune, and I was impressed by the fairly deep political philosophy it contained, as well as the overall good plot. I find the argument interesting that humanity feeds off chaos. Leto is an extremely interesting character. After a first reading, I'm not entirely sure exactly what to think of him. The Fish Speakers are also an interesting concept, looking at the book from the point of view of military history/theory. anyone else enjoy these books?

I have not read them in ages, but I thoroughly enjoyed them when I did.

The Dune series was pretty good, until you started getting to the Children of Dune.. then they started to get a little redundant.

However, the first 3 books where excellent reading, and very philosophical..

A good choice of Sci-Fi book :thumb:

I hated Dune. Their weren't any characters in it that seemed like real people, especially the women. The movies were worse. And being a nihilist philosopher isn't special.

And, in response to Undomiel in the linked thread, I am tired of star wars. The magic is gone, and only poor righting and mediocre acting remains.

And to be even more bitter, I am sorry you rerad all that Ayn Rand Solly.

Finally, I recommend all you sci-fi fans to read Snow Crash, by Neil Stephenson. It is cyber punk comedy par excellence.

i'd agree with ryokan's last sentence......but Dune is not about the characters at all really....i'd say it was about all the stuff the people represented.

agree with the women though.

star wars, conceptually, the first two eps are awesome. so awesome. in reality, and in just about any other way, horrible
