View Full Version : Televangelists Dubbed Voices of Christianity?

Have you ever watched a 1970s Kung Fu movie and noticed that the words don't seem to be in line with the body movements so you don't really know if you're getting the right picture of the plot? That's the way I see televangelism in America as concerning Christ's body - dubbed. The actual body of Christ is much different than the "movie" depicts. We have figureheads in the US that tell a much different tale of faith than what is really happening here.
It seems that true atheists do not recognize that they are watching a cheap copy of the original at times. It's sad because when you do finally meet God you will be surprised to find that no one knew the depth of his love and goodness otherwise or surely they would have told you. It is just impossible to describe that's how we end up with books like Revelation or Ezekiel with many words trying to describe what the scene is, but our human communication just simply cannot contain the Lord God Almighty.
Please know that I told you that you are watching a cheap imitation of what is happening in the spirit that is originally written in a different language. The language of brotherly love. You may not be able to pick up the moral of the story until you learn and or remember the primary language that comes from the heavenly.

This may represent a more reasoned view of televangelists, but the reality is that more than half of all Christians in America support one or more televangelists. The financial support from these people is huge. This goes back to radio and Billy Graham wrestling with Satan on TV. It is very much a reality that the evangelical and fundimentalist Christian movements have very strong roots in in radio and televangelism in American history and owe much of their popularity to this phenomenon. Having grown up in the era of their domination I know full well the manipulative charismatic power of these individuals.

I don't know where you got the information, but I suppose it's entirely possible. Do you think that half of the christians on this board support a televangelist? Times are changing and while these Christians might find some of their shows entertaining-----
EEEEK I think you are just right here, that's how I've gotten so angry before is people not realizing that the Charismatic doctrine of the 90s (when I was a part of it) is a thinly disguised pyramid scheme. In other words, you give your money to such and such preacher and God will bless you in return. This is where people tend to accuse me of not being Christian at all. I truly held this anger inside and cut myself off from christianity in general over this issue.
The point of the preceding post was that when you talk to people one on one they don't really believe everything that comes out these figureheads mouths. They just find it entertaining and they like to buy some of their products, but my perspective is based in the 90s before I walked away from church.

The people on this board do not represent a cross section of American Christianity. I think my figures are fairly accurate, and maybe a bit underestimated. In terms of the teleevangelical giants like Billy Graham the figure is closer to 75%+.

I do think most people who listen, watch and support these people do believe in most of what they preach. It is an interesting Protestant American phenomenon, that occurs in other Christian cultures only in the minority.

Many do consider the evangelists as having a large roll in reviving Christianity in the 20th century, from the religious depression of the late 19th century.

You don't hear from Billy Graham very frequently anymore. His son Franklin has taken over the ministry and it remains to be seen ho many followers he will have. The Grahams preach a doctrine primarily of Grace and not the give-until-it-hurts-and-let-God-take-care-of-your-financial-needs doctrine. I tend to offend many christian brothers and sisters by speaking against this practice. So I won't name people who, solely in my opinion, do this.
Those who are willing to see it will without my judging people.

I'd hate to stand on the scales of sin guilt at the moment against others. I've racked up too much weight there. My only hope is grace and so is theirs. I just believe it is a very dangerous and divisive doctrine that keeps people from coming toward Christ. Furthermore, the people speaking on tv have a louder voice and larger footprint than the Christians here or that I meet in real life.

Their (televangelists) ears appear to be shut to anyone who has questions or could be suffering life's trials. For instance, if you visit their websites there are many places to purchase by "love offering" goods. However, there are no message boards, Q& A links or any invitation to question in any way.
I may step on a few toes by posting this and while I am wanting a closer walk with Christ, I cannot drop these questions as part of who I am. I believe that they are valid.

BTW I changed names midway through this thread it is still rioblanca.

I have no problem with giving until it hurts and letting God take care of my financial needs. I do like to know that my money is going somewhere productive, though. And recognizing the long line of disreputable people who have attached themselves to my religion of choice despite not adhering to its tenants, I think you wont blame me if I am a bit wary of Televangelists.
