View Full Version : This is just sad: College students on Jeopardy didn't know Jesus wept for Lazarus

I was watching Jeopardy last Thursday and they had a college tournament going on. One of the categories that day was "Pithy Quotes." The students did very well on that category until they got to an answer that stated something to the effect of, "The shortest verse in the Bible, 'Jesus wept,' refers to Jesus' reaction to the death of this man." Silence. None of the students knew the answer! They didn't even take a guess. How sad is that? Unsurprising, unfortunately, but sad.

Yeah I was watching that at work. Kids just aren't into mythology like they use to be.

Please refrain from posting in Christian only areas.

Apparently when the Bible is studied as 'literature' the retention rate among students is the same as with other literature.

Did they actually know who Jesus was or did they think he was a character in a recent Spanish-American novel?

I would venture to guess that students of the same age, taken from Sunday School classes, wouldn't fare much better. (Yes, there are exceptions to the rule.)

Strangely, they retained quite a bit of knowledge about everything else.

I remember hearing the same thing happen with a group of Mensa members who were on a radio quiz program. The question was, what river was crossed by the prophet Elijah and the Israelites by miracle? They were silent for a while, until somebody- hesitantly- said, "the Jordan?" It was notable because they didn't hesitate on any of the other questions.
