What's the difference between calvinism and hypercalvinism?
Hiya Joan. Thanks for your question.
From the way I see it, Calvinists are more allowing for some level of free-will than hyper-calvinists are. William Carey is seen historically as the greatest missionary to India and when he was going to go, though he was a Calvinist, his hyper-Calvinist teachers told him not to go for if God wants them saved, he'll do it.
I'm also going to contact a Calvinist friend and have them post here so as to be sure I'm not misrepresenting a position.

Briefly stated, I am inclined to say the difference can be summed up by understanding the theological implications of hard determinism versus compatibilism.
I recommend reading... http://www.spurgeon.org/~phil/articles/hypercal.htm
and
http://www.apuritansmind.com/PuritanWorship/McMahonABriefCritiqueOfHyper-Calvinism.htm
...for an in-depth answer.
If you're interested, the following would be an enlightening, yet inexpensive book on the subject: http://monergismbooks.com/spurgeon6920.html

Nick was on the money. Also hyper Calvinism is noted for God actively working unbelief in the reprobate. It should also be said, that hyper Calvinism isn't just overly zealous Calvinism, it is error and pretty serious at that, imho.
