Blessed are those who have discovered wisdom, those who have acquired understanding! Gaining her is more rewarding than silver, her yield is more valuable than gold. She is beyond the price of pearls, nothing you could covet is her equal. In her right hand is length of days; in her left hand, riches and honor. Her ways are filled with delight, her paths all lead to contentment. She is a tree of life for those who hold her fast, those who cling to her live happy lives. {Proverbs 3:13 - 3:18 NJB}
“If at first you don’t succeed try and try again” ever hear that one? I’d like to offer an alternative, a better one! “If at first you don’t succeed try wisdom, then try it’s advice!”
I once read a story of a newly hired carpenter nailing siding to a new house under construction. (I've added some details of my own.) It seems every second or third nail he was throwing away. When questioned by his supervisor he calmly replied, “Well, sir the nails I’m throwing away are left handed nails and I working on the right side of the house.” After looking rather puzzled the supervisor replied, “Darn it I told that guy at the supply house not to mix right and left handed nails in one box good work Joe I’m glad someone is using a little wisdom!”
Wisdom is one of the most under used of all resources available to us. The electronic dictionary in my computer defines wisdom thus: “Ability to apply knowledge or experience or understanding or common sense and insight.”
One day a few years ago I actually considered entering a “Toughman” contest with the hopes of winning the prize money. A few seconds later while standing in front of a mirror I took one look at my physique, thought about my artificial hips then suddenly heard wisdom say, “Gary you’ll be killed!” I immediately picked up on what wisdom was telling me and promptly dismissed the idea of getting my brains scrambled and my physique rearranged! Praise God for Wisdom!
I remember from my early childhood years in school of being taught when crossing a street to “Stop, look both ways, listen, and then cross the street.” If you were to follow that advice and saw a car approaching and heard it’s horn would you step into the street and in front of the car? Neither would I. That same lesson applies to most circumstances of our lives. You can not become wise without first taking the time to pray for and use wisdom!
Enjoy the day it’s a gift from God!
