Two weeks ago I came down with strep throat. As I tried to sleep, I had a strange dream. It's hard to describe, but it was as if I was fighting something. It was wearing me out. As the night went on, I woke up several times. Each time I went back to sleep, I had the same dream, only I was making a little progress in my "fight". The next night, I had the same dream, only I had won. My fever broke that night.
It reminds me of a similar dream I had years ago when I got a stomach virus: I was fighting a monster. Like the recent dream, the fight was hard, but when I finally defeated the thing, I felt physically better.

I know there is a connection between the body and mind, but has anybody heard of this happening, or experienced something like it?

This is quite common. Carl Jung has written extensively on the topic (all of his books are still in print, although they are generally not writen for the general public "Man and His Symbols" being the main exception). He even claims to have diagnosed a physical disease (cancer) through a dream once. Dreams are metaphors or bad jokes. You just have to "get it".
