I have no idea where this post should go. I know it doesn't belong in theology 101...but that's where it's gonna go. :teeth:

please redirect this to anywhere it should be..if it should not be here. (i know it has nothing to do with theology)

Ok... I love music.

Don't worry this isn't about modal composition techniques or diminished triad arpeggios...you don't have to know anything about music to answer me.

Is God more glorified by worship music or by secular music?

Let me explain.

If you ever listen to good country music...you are destined to hear some seemingly preachy stuff. The new Brooks and Dunn hit comes to mind (red dirt road)...which seems rather preachy about finding Jesus. The whole world (or at least those of us with good musical taste) hears this. Not just Tommy Churchgoer.

Bands such as Jars of Clay were temporarily shunned by christian music for becoming too "mainstream"...and a countless number of christian bands are never heard by anyone but the seclusive chistian world.

I personally feel that God is more truly glorified and pleased by the preaching of secular (in particular country) artists than he is with the artists stuck in their christian world.

To make it as blatant (and offensive) as can be...I think God prefers Garth Brooks over Michael W. Smith. (no offense michael)

Or the greatest band in the entire world of all time...Nickel Creek.
Do not they convey the gospel much better in stuff like "the hand song" than many christian groups??

What do you folks think??

Also...if you agree with me...what other "secular" bands preach the gospel better than the gospel bands?

God sees much humor in names like "The Greatfull Dead but more than likely thinks the music hurts.

I believe that the bands stuck exclusively in the Christian world minister to Christians. They give the Christian listeners support, peace, happiness by hearing God's word in the music they listen to, so these bands are useful and not just wasted.

They also do reach non-believers when the non-believer flips across the radio dial or tv dial and hear one of the songs by "accident." Also their style of music is many times similar to the styles and trends of the secular world so when a believer invites a non-believer to go to a concert or loans them a christian cd the non-believer is more apt to listen to it than if it was just a choir sining the hallelujah chorus.

So I believe God is greatly glorified by today's Christian bands.

This type of a question coincides with the concept of modern churches.

Do you go to Church to get something out of it, or to worship? Hence does God get more out of man's satisfaction or His Worship. You are just applying this concept to music and concluding that since non-believers hear Jesus referenced in worldly settings it is a good thing for God.

God calls us out of the world and separates us as a holy nation to be priests offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to Him.

We are to glorify God in all we do, if no one hears it but God then it is valuable and has meaning. If the whole world hears blasphemies then the whole world is lessened by it.

Cordially,

Thomas

First off...God does not call us out of the world, he calls us out of the wordliness.

He calls us to make preach unto all the world...not just amongst our churchgoing friends.

Sure, I totally agree that it is important to have worship music...but didn't Jesus flip tables for people selling God like that??

Why charge 15 dollars or more to hear worship music?? It's absurd. I spend 15 dollars to hear good music. I shouldn't have to spend the same amount to hear people singing to God. People shouldn't even sell that stuff.

So what I think is most important is that music be good musically.

I'd prefer a good painting of the beach over a worthless painting of a crucifixion scene.

Also...we are called to preach unto the world. This is what secular bands can do...that christian bands cannot do so well. Granted...many christian rock bands have gone through the rock music scene and impacted it greatly, but I still feel that many country bands have a better ministry.

Brooks and Dunn have saved more people than most christian bands. The irony is that these christian bands get paid BECAUSE they preach while Brooks and Dunn only preach because they want to.

Also...if anyone has ever heard the grateful dead...they would realize that it is amazing music. I think god is a radical and awesome god...I think he sat in concerts and raised his lighter every time Jerry Garcia started jamming. :teeth:

I think that God's favorite band, if he was a partial God, would be Metallica. I think God would be impressed by Lars Ulrich's impressive double bass beats.

Oh yeah...I'm just kidding. I realize that the theological world never has any fun, and though I got kind of off topic, I think God is much more fun than theologians think. After all...he did make the waves...and that was the most bitchin' invention ever.
