I was watching the British Antiques Roadshow, as is my wont.
There is a persistant story in most major wars about a soldier that gets saved from death by a bullet lodging in a Book, I have seen dictionaries and Bibles as the books.
A couple bought along somthing that their father bought back from the trenches of the first world war. It had a bullet lodged in it and this, very old, couple said that it saved the wifes father.
The bullet was still lodged in it, the first actual evidence I have ever seen for this story. I saw it so I cant dispute it, it looked like tests we did with paper flack jackets.
What was it that saved him? I hear you ask.
A pack of french dirty postcards. Porn saved this guys life. I would Love to know if any modern military historian or even a WW1 propagandist started this story. But its the earliest version of this story I have seen.

This is by far the best version of the saved-by-the-book stoy I've ever come across. Unfortunately, I've got no insights into the origins of these stories. I've also never tested the capabilities of paper at stopping bullets. Glad to know it works.
Sounds quite plausible to me, though. I know that if I was in a war, I definitely wouldn't be carrying a dictionary along with me...
Porn saves!
Sorry, it just had to be said.

Welcome to Tweb.
Dont apologise, nobody reads this board.
Unless someone posts something of huge import. then it gets moved.
I was just stunned to see what might have been the start of the story.

Not quite as heart-warming as getting saved by a Bible, but if it works it works.
