Well, I didn't really see an option I could agree with. My take on porn: Mildly interesting in very small doses; otherwise, pretty boring.

I find porn a total non-issue. I don't find it repulsive, upsetting, irritating, immoral etc. I also don't find it stimulating when compared to the real thing.
I would probably have more porn mags in my flat if it wasn't for the nice old lady in the newspaper shop. I couldn't have her thinking I go home and practice self-pollution now, could I? :teeth:

I voted for "pass me the playboy", as well as "I don't read the stuff" because, as much porn as I've ogled over throughout the years, I can't recall ever reading any of it.

Playgirl is immoral and offensive. Playboy, on the other hand, rocks.

Ryo, I was making a point. You chose your path. You are welcome here, you always will be but now you have to ask first. Ask the thread starter.
Thats the rule. Don't Blame me I did not make them.

My take on porn reading/viewing is that it is a safer alternative to sex. No one gets pregnant or catches an STI by porn. There still can be negative social effects, e.g. it could make your significant other feel inadequate or it could get you kicked out of the ministry.
Production is another area. So long as those involved are doing what they want to do, I see no problem. At the same time, it's easy enough to imagine situations with coersion involved which would not be fine at all. Textual pornography production should only annoy tree huggers.

Human beings become naturally sexually active at about 13. The natural desire and tendency is to start making babies at this point. Our society has pushed back the acceptable marriage age to 20+ and it has been going up even higher recently. The majority of pornography is consumed by single men aged 14-marriage, which includes divorced men. Once married the volume of pornography consumed drops significantly. Women do not consume anywhere close to the same quantity as men and a casual examination of numbers of magazines directed at men verses those directed at women (the market) shows that the case. Youth don't have a sexual focus or desire.
Although not a part of the study I read, I would guess that older men who "can't get it up" anymore probably consume more pornography just because humans desire sexual interaction even if they can't interact. Older women who don't have partners, probably would consume some form of sexual stimulant but due to their greater desire for "interaction" probably consume Harlequin romance novels instead of porn.

Never underestimate the size of the sexually frustrated male market.
I'm sure it includes married men as well.

My choice wasn't included. So I voted for all of the above.

I see nothing wrong with it at all but all things in moderation. It is a shame to see people tortured by it. They look and then they feel guilty or they don't look and want to so bad that it consumes them. To me porn is like baseball in that both are okay to watch but you don't really appreciate them until you are playing yourself.

This could account for why I can only watch about ten or fifteen minutes of baseball at any one time.

Yes, I want to take time with my magazine: treat it right, turn the pages slowly -- you know, really make it last for the periodical. Because goodness knows it takes a while for these magazines to get started, and if you just skip right past the table of contents and the letters to the editor then the magazine wont be fully finished.
Or were you talking about watching baseball?

Thank you ladies and gentlemen.
I apologise for not adding fem porn, but I dont know that much about it. My next poll will include Fem porn. Once I find out what it is.

I've never been into porn.
For some reason, sluts trying to get my money by appealing to my libido has always offended me more than anything.
I've other weaknesses, I guess.
This area is for non theists only. Please check forum rules before posting.

Hello All,
(This is my first post on TWEB, so please bear with me if I screw up the formatting...I'm still getting used to this interface.)
I guess it says something about me that my first post is in response to a poll on porn. I really appreciated the honesty and humor of many of the posts so I couldn't resist putting in my two cents worth.
I personally think porn is pretty harmless stuff in moderation, however when my wife saw me surfing a porn site some years ago she let me know she thought otherwise. I was pretty shocked by her response, and she was equally shocked that I could be so stupid to think that she wouldn't be shocked. It really caused a lot of tension for about a month. She felt "betrayed" as if I had ACTUALLY committed adultery which I thought was preposterous. In the interests of marital harmony I gave the stuff up...well sort of.
A few months ago I was on a business trip to San Diego and the hotel had free wireless access; well why have free wireless access if not for viewing at least a little porn? I was surprised at how attractive the stuff was. I thought I'd take a peek for a few minutes then go back to watching baseball or something....three hours later the pains from the carpal tunnel brought me back to the real world. I honestly don't know how any red blooded male could watch Jill Kelly getting it on and NOT be mesmerized. On the other hand some of the sites had some pretty disgusting stuff...I won't mention exactly what I mean here but for those of you who have hundreds of porn sites bookmarked you know what I mean. After I got home it took me about a week of disciplined thinking to get the urge to surf porn out of my head and since then I haven't given it much thought.
I think for a certain segment of the population porn could really help them with releasing pent up sexual desire (like ministers and priests), for another part (such as my demographic) it could cause problems with relationships, and I think for a minority it could lead to some pretty warped views of sexuality and their understanding of women. As a worshipper of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness I worry about women who are exploited in the sex industry. It's my opinion that the majority do it for the money and as long as they're happy with the exchange great; however I'm certain that a number of them are being exploited against their wills, and I think that's troubling.
Anyway that’s my two cents worth.
Peace,
Rich

Thanks Arterial Spray, I appreciate the greeting. I've admired your work here particularly your defense of atheistic morality. The atheist community here is my favorite on the web, which is why I want to join it. Take care of yourself.

The women "exploited" by the porn industry seems an idea that stems from an ancient time when women were seen as fair innocent flowers. If anything they are sent into businesses like porn because they are shut out of opportunities elsewhere however I for one know many college girls that were exotic dancers and they were the ones exploiting frustrated married men. I think it is a powerful expression of a woman's confidence and sexuality.

I voted "Not really, but its a free speech issue." Mostly I've found it pretty gross. I've looked at porn a couple times but the way girls are portrayed and treated in the films is kind of a turn off to me. That probably sounds pretty weird coming from an 18 year old male. Don't get me wrong porn definately can turn me on but I was raised very "old fashioned" with respect to how you treat women and so to see the stuff they do in alot of those movies is well....not my style. Playboy ain't that bad though
Plus the exploitation going on in the industry both of "actors" and customers (addicts) just gives me a bad vibe when I think about or watch most kinds of porn. Playboy ain't that bad though

I seriously doubt that you would be saying that if your daughter wanted to become or was an exotic dancer/porn star.

You would seriously be wrong. Porn and stripping are no different than a girl working at Hooters or as a matter of fact any waittress job where they are forced to smile and work their bums off for tip money. Working hard for a living and using every resource you can to make money is something to be applauded. We are all exploited at jobs to some extent. If you have to be exploited would you rather it be at some crappy job or as a dancer or porn star?

As long as porn is a legitimate industry with worker safeguards and no one is being exploited more than the teenager at McDonalds or the old guy greeting you at Wal-mart, I think porn has a valid place in society.
I particularly like the fact that much of the porn industry has changed with the empowerment of women, and the exploitation hat probably hangs just as much on the male consumer as the female performer.
