What do you do when inevitably at church or some other Christian gathering the worship song is a definitely futurist-oriented song? Do you stand silent?
I get very very uncomfortable. I don't sing them, and feel like I stick out like a sore thumb and have a fluorescent scarlett P on my chest.

:yeahthat:
But since I have been going to Reformed churches, I have not had that problem.
But at my former church, there were times when I would stand in silence for that very reason (The song "Day's of Elijah" comes to mind, not only futurist, but bad general theology too).

I frequent quite a few churches and/or Christian gatherings, and it seems that all of them have futurist songs even when you would not expect it as they are not all dispensational types but are amill types. And what makes is worse is that whenever one comes on, I can feel the eyes of any companions I have with me that know my position (not everyone I know even knows my position as I don't make it an issue very often) on me.

At my last "dispy" church, I used to sit very close the front. I would almost always sing out (and not everyone did), so when I didn't sing, I got a few looks. (but no one ever said anything except Mrs. F.)
Edit to add: I also would not sing songs by certain heretical oneness groups. (you know of whom I speak).

Yes I certainly do.
I love it when a dispy Church or group (as it seems at least in my circles the majority of my personal peers are dispy) does "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name" - and that is an AWESOME song. But it proclaims the Church as Israel. And I sing it LOUDLY. Not well, mind you, but LOUDLY. Perhaps things are different where you are, but I have not found a difference in Reformed, etc Churches that are contemporary with dispy Churches.

Quite defiant acts you two engage in. Maybe generations to come will be reading about you in "Foxes Book of Preterist Martyrs"?

Nah the futurists I know are pretty nonviolent.
Would you sing a song you had strong theological problems with?

It depends, take this one:
The River of God
Down the mountain the river flows and it brings refreshing wherever it goes. Through the valleys and over the fields the river is rushing and the river is here. The river of God sets our feet a-dancing. The river of God fills our hearts with cheer. The river of God fills our mouths with laughter and we rejoice for the river is here. The river of God is teeming with life and all who touch it can be revived and those who linger on this river’s shore will come back thirsting for more of the Lord. Up to the mountain we love to go to find the presence of the Lord. Along the banks of the river we run. We dance with laughter giving praise to the Son
I like to sing this song, but if carefully read it can certainly seem to promote the counterfeit revival.
Now this one I won't sing, it's flat out creepy:
I Receive You, O Spirit of Love
I receive You, O Spirit of love, how I need your healing from above, I receive you. I receive You, I receive your healing from above. I can feel Your power on me now. I can feel Your power on me now. I can feel you, touching me right now, Come reveal Your power on me now, I can feel You. I can feel You. I can feel Your power on me now. I can feel Your power on me now.
I really don't like 7-11 worship music anyway, but the one above is just flat out bad.

Can I have an example of some "Jesus is coming soon" song lyrics? Is it just: 'Jesus is coming soon, prepare yourselves' or more like 'Jesus is coming soon so you won't get marked by computer chips and the black choppers overhead won't get yoooooou'. If the former, what's wrong with singing that?

I don't mind singing them to be honest... I just a sucker for old hymns... :teeth:

Xavier, I can't think of one old hymn right now that has that problem.
Furay - for example, Third Day:
The time is now near when He shall appear, and we'll see His face and His voice we will hear.

I don't believe that at all.

I still think this song is the worst:
"We're gonna dance in the river."
That's it. They just sing that line over and over and over again.
WHY?

One of the more popular ones (it was even more popular 5-6 years ago) goes something like this (from memory so there will be errors and maybe some gaps):
Midnight Cry:
I look all around me, I see prophecy fulfilling
The signs of the times are written everywhere
I can almost here the trumpet, as Gabriel sounds his horn
At the midnight cry, we'll be going home.
[chorus]
When Jesus steps out, on a cloud to call His children
The dead in Christ will rise, to meet him in the air
And then those that remain, will be quickly changed
At the midnight cry, we'll be going home.
Second verse (I can't rember)
Chorus
Chorus
FWIW, I used to love that song when I was a dispy.

What's wrong with that song? Clay Cross did a GREAT rendition of it... :teeth:
And peradventure are you referring to PC&D??

Well, now wait a sec...
Do we believe that Jesus is coming back one day? Do we believe that it could be "soon"? Do we believe what Paul said that He will appear with the shout of the voice of the archangel and the dead will rise?
Ok, so sing the songs with this in mind, keeping the theology simple and sound. Hek, I'm all for Jesus coming back anytime, though I'm not talking here about a secret rapture or anything like that. (If there is one, great. If there ain't. I don't care.)
I'm just saying that it ain't worth throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Maybe, however, Dee Dee is talking about some sort of particular theological style of songs or something...I don't know. But I sing most of the songs that are out there (namely, the older ones), and I don't even associate it with a rapture, pre-mid- or post-millennium theology. I just want Jesus to get His rear end back here and straighten out this mess!

Dee Dee, I sort of chuckle and sing along. I occasionally lead the congregational singing on youth nights, and I had to lead "Jesus is Coming Again." I don't know if you know the lyrics, but my youth pastor found it humorous.
"Maybe morning, maybe noon, maybe evening, it will be soon. Coooooming again, cooooming again, oh what a wonderful day it will be! Jesus is coming again!"
I also get annoyed when the song leader says "It could be right now as we're singing" and I'm like "ya rly."
Ah well. I'd take the singing over the references to being in the laodicean church age and stuff like that.

Years ago, I attended a Reformed Full-Gospel church. A funny combination, I know, but the pastor was as Christ-like a man as any could hope for. He was always careful not to allow worhsip songs that were theologically unsound, and I later came to appreciate that. One of his favorites in particular was "In Christ Alone" (my hope is found), which I love for it's straightforward proclamation of the gospel.
My current church home is...not so dilligent in this pursuit. When the song makes no sense, or has error in it, I do not sing. Do I stick out? A bit, although my brothers are gracious enough not to make a big dealio of it.
That "The River Is Here" song is one of those songs where I have to ask "What are you talking about?"
I also would not sing songs by certain heretical oneness groups. (you know of whom I speak).
Worship songs by a heretical oneness group? For the sake of us who haven't noticed this, please do name names.

Philips, Craig, & Dean are all Oneness Pentecostal pastors and are not particularly forthright about it

Great song, well except for the bad theology and the newspaper exegesis. :barf:

Theology is fair... he sings scripture for the most part in the chorus.
Peradventure I was.
I love using that word!! :thumb:

I find myself in an even more awkward situation.
I believe Revelation is a forgery or made up story so there are very many songs that I will not listen to let alone sing.
I started out examing preterism and found that compelling and later investigated Revelation and came to my current conclusion.
I found lots of other things that seem to have been removed or added by the early catholic church, leaving me on very shaky ground in terms of what is left that I can trust in the new testament.
Maybe God will lead a christian into all truth and not the catholic books.
