I want to cut up a banner for a sig into smilie-sized portions, what are the max sizes?

Ah, that's 10,240 bytes, not kb.

Open it in your preferred editing program, cut 100 x 100 sections, and paste it into a new image. The max height for the banner as a whole is 100 pixels, but it can be as wide as the sig window will support.

so how do you chop up a banner?

First make sure it's height is no more than 100 pixels high.

Then begin at one end and start chopping off chunks 100 pixels or less wide, and save them individually.

Alternatively, you can use the centering mark of the image and divide the image and its subsequent parts in half until they are all under the 100 pixel width limit.

BUT, in either case you must be very careful to select the exact same vertical points for every piece.
