Hello all,
I get Meridian Magazine every day, but most days I just look through the headlines and if there is something on archaeology and the bom, then I read it, but I usually just pass on all the other articles, but today, this caught my eye...

A Mormon President?
David M. Bresnahan
Day after day some newspaper somewhere decides to run the same old tired story about unannounced Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, declaring that a Mormon could never be elected president because the evangelical Christians would never support him.
That opening statement is followed by paragraph after paragraph showing the good, moral qualities of the LDS's.
Does being good and moral people hack it?
But... that's another topic. Would you vote for a LDS for president?

I would.
I'd vote for Mitt over someone like Kerry or Hillary in a New York minute.

Politically speaking, an LDS president would well represent my social conservativism.

Depends on his stances. I know a few Mormon Democrats who go against the church's stance on aortion. I would never vote for that.

I wouldn't vote for anyone named 'Mitt'.

I hear ya Bill, but I got the distinct impression that the original question was asking if we would dismiss the idea of voting for an LDS president based solely on the fact that they were LDS.

If he was a good leader and knew how to handle the country well, then I don't care what religion he is.

A little off topic . . .
Mitt is one of the most well spoken individuals I've ever listened to.

Probably not, because our Democrats (i.e. Utah's democrats) are everyone elses Republicans. Our Republicans make DDW look like a liberal.
Now, if this was a Mormon from outside of Utah, that'd be a different matter.

Between Mitt and Hillary, I'd have to go with Mitt. Between Mitt and Condi, Guiliani, and or McCain, I'd vote for them first.

Well...
I haven't voted on this poll yet... I'm waiting to be influenced on the poll.
Has anyone here ever hear of the "sisterhood" in the government ranks?
And ...is anyone aware that in the past the Quorum of the Twele Apostles ordered all LDS members serving in Congress to vote against the ERA bills in 1977.
I think I will post a secondary question on this and... maybe another poll.

Please provide reference for the 'order', I seemed to have missed it.

So true. Although I really like governor John Huntsman. And I don't vote along party lines anyway, I vote the issues and the candidate.

Hi there!
http://library.lds.org/nxt/gateway.dll/Magazines/Ensign/1980.htm/ensign%20march%201980.htm/frequently%20asked%20questions%20about%20the%20proposed%20equal%20rights%20amendment%20a%20closer%20look.htm
18. Has the Church encouraged members to oppose ratification of the ERA?
Yes. The First Presidency has spoken out against the amendment and urged members to exercise their civic rights and duties and to “join actively with other citizens who share our concerns and who are engaged in working to reject this measure on the basis of its threat to the moral climate of the future.”
I guess the point that should be made in regards to a presidential election... Would the First Presidency of the mormon church "encourage" members to support a candidate simply because he was of their faith, therefore, "actively ... share our concerns"????
~serapha~
BTW... after going to a couple of LDS forums and inquiring on past practices, I voted "No Way" would I vote for a mormon for president... simply because I could not in good conscience believe that a member of the LDS could perform the duties without the influence of the leadership of the CoJCoLDS.

Personally, if a candidate was a practicing LDS, that would be two strikes against him in my book. But, then I voted for Bush, and it appears that he's not what he said he was - so who knows.

I don't think it really should matter what a person's religious views are. Ideas are what matter. I could vote for an atheist who has good views on fiscal policies and immigration over Harry Reid of Nevada who is LDS but his politics are crazy.
I think it will be wise or any republican candidate not to make an issue out of Mitt Romney's faith too much if he indeed does run. Given the fact that the nation is so polarized, the last things republicans need is an upset LDS voting block in Utah taking giving Utahs 4 electoral votes to the democrats. I think the media will make a bigger deal out of it than the candidates however. Frankly however I would like to see an independent win the presidency. Both the democrats and republicans don't seem to have the best interests of the american people at center stage.
