For your amusement, here are a couple of pictures of some artwork I’ve done recently.

The first is a quick sketch I did using some oil paint that was left over on my palette from other painting. It’s about 4x5 inches and took about 10-15 minutes.

The second is a pottery clay original of a wood nymph that I hope to cast several copies of in plaster to use as a decorative sculptural element in crown moldings, door frames, etc. The colors were produced strictly by using various colors of earthen clay, with no pigment added. It’s about 3.5 inches in diameter. I can't remember how long it actually took in total, since clay can require long drying intervals while work is in progress. I simplified the lines to make it easier to demold the copies. It's supposed to look "Victorian."

Wow! Very nice, I especially love the wood nymph.

I like that sculpture. The best I could ever do with clay was a comical looking dragon breathing fire, and everyone kept asking what that was he was chewing on.

One of my favorite contemporary artists is the concept artist Yoshitaka Amano. I particularly like his stylizations of facial features: eyes, noses, and mouths. So, a couple of nights ago I hauled out the Complete Prints and did this quick sketch based (very loosely) on the face in catalog #900. It also plays on a theme that I'm artistically interested in: envy. The title of my sketch is Wicked Stepmother: Age Envies Youth. (Graphite ~8x6 inches).

The second sketch is another take on the "wicked stepmother" theme, but I missed getting envy into it, it only has malice.

They remind me of the illustrations in Mervyn Peake's "Titus Groans."

oooOOOoo I like the second one a lot.

Thank you both!

And I should have mentioned: the background in the second should actually be darker (that’s the moon), but graphite was already getting all over everything.

Wow! That’s quite a compliment; I love Mervyn Peake's drawings.

Peake was a real master of economy of texture, in the way that Matisse was a master of economy of line and form. My favorite is the drawing of Fuchsia near the beginning of the first book; it captures so much using so little that it’s almost painful to look at.

Thank you!

Although the truth is, to the extent that I do well at all, it is proportional to the practice I put into it. Which, I'm ashamed to admit, has not been much lately.
