According to Mormonism of course.

More specifically, how did it do whatever it is that it did.

If I'm not mistaken, most LDS believe in the atonement (excepting, perhaps, Brigham Young et al). The main recognizable difference I get is that they believe it took place in stages. They believe that it began in Gethsemane, and culminated on the crucifix.
In fact, and I'm not meaning to take over your thread, I would like to know exactly the significance of that particular divergence in view. Why do they insist on that point?

I have to tell you AM, that in my humble opinion it is because those who deny the Gospel of grace in Jesus Christ (and Mormons and Jws both do), also seem to despise the cross. You will never find a cross on or in a Kingdom Hall, nor will you find it on or in a Mormon temple or chapel. However, many early Christians used this symbol - and it has been enscribed on ossuaries from the 1st century found in the Holy Land.

I've read only a little bit about the LDS opinion of the Crucifixion. I'm still waiting to hear it from the horse's mouth though.

Should I save this question for the BYU staff/students when I go to Utah then?
