Hi Pogo. Let's look at your question.

Whatever our answer, it will have to include all of the churches in the NT, and we can find several problems going on in many of the churches, as well as stay faithful to the Scripture.

My answer is simply that the church does not refer to one denomination but the body of Christ. Who is in the body? All who cling to Christ as savior and Lord. I believe this can be summed up well in statements like the Nicene Creed. I would make sure someone believes the Trinity, deity of Christ, salvation by grace through faith, and the physical resurrection.
