  • Suddenly Stinky Dog Breath

I have a 7-year-old black Lab who never leaves our property and goes out maybe 5 times a day to our fenced back yard. This has been his life from the day we brought him home. His environment hasn't changed, nor his diet. In the last month, his breath has suddenly turned vile! It's not typical dog breath, which I don't find that unpleasant. It smells like poo and decay and something other-worldly all at once. His dental checkup 2 months ago was stellar. His droppings look fine. Google suggests it may be some form of intestinal issue, but I don't know what that might be. Some days, it's barely noticeable; others we just tell him to leave the room! I've occasionally given him a mixture of yogurt & coconut oil, which he loves, but I have no idea if this is helping.

    Anyone have words of wisdom?

It's possible that he's got a tooth that is rotting or an infection in his gums - which can happen rather suddenly. It is also possible that he is eating his own feces or the feces of other animals. But I'm not a vet so you should see one and take his advise over mine.

      Dogs like to eat poo
That could be the reason it smells like poo

Yeah, I haven't seen evidence of that. We've been trying to keep an eye on him when he's in the yard. In fact, my husband informed me this morning that our doggie used our dining room as a latrine overnight -- extremely rare for him. Apparently, he didn't find that palatable.

He is probably eating his own poo. You have to watch them very carefully. They need to smell poo to help themselves get the urge to go [in your time-frame]. So you have to watch them to make sure they are just smelling it to help themselves go instead of eating it. They are dogs so be careful how hard you discipline them when you catch them eating it. The Bible says that a dog returns to his own vomit so it could be a lifelong thing.
There are four types of giving in the Bible:

          1. Tithe – Motivation is Obedience.

          2. First Fruits – Motivation is Generosity.

          3. Alms Giving – Motivation is Compassion.

          4. Seed Giving – Motivation is Faith and Reward.

Watch your dog very closely for a while. If he's not eating his own poop, have your vet check him. It may be kidneys or soemthing like that. HHe's not actually that young anymore.
