This is good and the Sk'lans don't speak in chicken scratch any longer! I loved the part about the Tilkriegs tails. I guess they shed them once in a while, no?

I still prefer the way you used to arrange the strips, but I guess you can't please everyone.

You may not have seen in the intro material that I present speech in a "native" format in certain circumstances -- in that last case, the Sk'lan was speaking what was a foreign language in Nullabor; here they're all speaking the language of the Northwest, so we get it in English. Same with the Chet'lyn in ST#3: When they're among themselves, we get English. When they speak to Gen'a'too and Brom, we get Wingdings.

I loved the part about the Tilkriegs tails. I guess they shed them once in a while, no?

That I have not decided. It does make me wonder if the various furry races of Hearthstone have shedding seasons. Hmm. Could make it very interesting where allergies are concerned.

"I'm allergic to Prycene dander, would you mind sitting over there?"

In restaurants: Shedding and no-shedding sections?

I still prefer the way you used to arrange the strips, but I guess you can't please everyone.

:glare: Yeah. :rasberry:

Why do the Sk'lan talk like Yoda?

Not meant to sound like him...just a variation on their grammar. I suspect if we had strict word for word order translations, a lot of languages would sound like Yoda. I recall (and Leonhard can verify) that in German, for example, verbs often came at the end of a sentence, which seems a little Yodalike to me.

As for an example,

"Ich habe das licht gesehen."

Translated "I have seen the light"

Directly translated "I have the light seen"

Hi JP!
Yes, true. I studied german for six years. (Although it was a long time ago, so I´d need to do some repetition.)

Wouldn´t it be nice to have some of your characters speaking swedish (or at least "swenglish")? I can assist with some great expertise, born a swede. Oh, I see... I would be the only one getting the jokes...

Consider the swedish words
pigg = alert, brisk
kry = well, fit

An american pastor visited a church in Sweden, and the swedish pastor tried some kind conversation:
- How do you feel? Are you pig and cry?

:teeth:

The most annoying thing with german is that you have to wait until the end of a sentence before you know what they actually are talking about, you get no clue whatsoever along the way. Hmm.. Does that mean that germans are more interested in describing things and attributes more than actions? Or are they as enlightened as Yoda, having their disciples waiting for wisdom? Could we have stopped WWII if we earlier had an idea what they were talking about?

All the best,
Dan Bostrom

It gives some insight into the creulty of the Sk'lan, does it not?

I finished the inks last night. Maybe I can get in one more part colored before I leave for the conference. At least get to see how they escape to the West, eh?

I assume you mean, when will we see your character Darthex as more than a name, since "you" are named in RP #3 and 4.

To answer I'll first lay out a general plan for what's ahead that won't give away too much:

ST #4 -- resolution of the possession of Felicity by Gen'a'too. The crew will end the story in Nullabor at Eidolon's shelter and head out for their meeting with the Range Patrol team.
RP #5 -- Beamer resolves his crush on Sheila. Also some stuff on Cartel tactics.
ST #5/RP #6 -- crossover story with the two teams.
ST #6 -- this is where it gets fuzzy. Brom and Felicity trek into Cartel territory so he can fulfill part of Eidolon's prophecy about him. This may take up into ST #7.
RP #7 -- Jelica's introduction and the resolution of the "missile mystery".
ST #7 (8?) -- Introduction of Tyk Jyn-Rayana and MAYBE Molinist. Darth's gal Pepper will show up here, as well.

At this point I want to start the Claw of Vengeance cycle. I may overlap the titles as in the crossover story (eg, Claw of Vengeance #1 may also be Range Patrol #8). CV will take at least 3-4 stories to resolve. Darthex will definitely appear in the last one, but whether he can or will appear any earlier I don't know yet.

Is there more than one main villain? Since you're Darthex, you know some of this already  -- not really, not in the sense of a figurehead. I see the Sk'lan as grouped into a set of "royal houses" that collectively dominate the Northwest. Beamer's former master G'nai would be one of several on a council of leaders.

Honestly, the Sk'lan are not bright as a whole and don't make very interesting bad guys on an individual basis. I sort of want it that way, for reasons that will become clear at the end of CV.

That said, you might consider M'l'strom to be a "main" bad guy, and Darthex to be another (given the caveats I sent you) for the Cartel cycle, and I've hinted already that we'll get a third one before too long out of Tyra.

By the way, I'm also thinking ahead a little to the Forces of Nature cycle and how to make it a little more complex.

To answer Darth's question, technically, the Prycenes no longer have their "empire", having over time granted freedom to the subject nations so that only the homeland (Taritanya) is left in their holdings. I expect some of them still call him the "emperor" out of custom but "king" really is more appropos at this time in their history.

As an aside, I haven't set anything in stone about how the king and queen exercise their joint rule, other than that (note) while the king is seated (the humble throne as a symbol of power), it is the queen that holds the scepter (also a symbol of power). Being that the Prycenes are quite egalitarian, it could be interesting.

Last section up. Here's the "insider" below as well.

**********

There were three component scenes upon which A Sanslorian's Tale were built: Annabelle calling to Bimf through the storm (page 14); Bimf's "changed" transformation (p. 22); and Beamer's defiant stance (p. 25) and cautious glance at Bimf after killing one of his Sk'lan overlords. From these three scenes, the rest of the story was pieced together; a tragic tapestry of anger, grief, and compassion. No story in the Hearthstone series may move you more than this one may have -- but then again, perhaps Range Patrol #5 will get ya, too. (wink)

Everyone needs an origin story, and Beamer and Bimf's escape from the Cartel lands served that purpose and a number of others: It explains how the Sanslorian came to serve as peace officers in the East; it gives insight into how the Sk'lan manage their affairs (as well as how they use the Tilkrig to accomplish their own purposes), and it gives us a reason for Beamer's unrelenting (and secret) crush on Sheila. Fear not...the little guy will resolve this issue in the next story, Range Patrol #5, Across the Elapine Line, and it'll pave the way for Jelica to steal his heart instead.

The question might arise among those of more detail-orientation....obviously the Tilkrig are too small (and the Sanslorian too large) to establish any sort of marriageable relationship with most of the other races we've seen on Hearthstone; maybe there are others they can have that sort of relationship with? For the Sanslorian, the answer is no (despite a reader joke abotu Bimf falling in love with a Tilkrig girl!); but their isolated, pacifist nature makes it unlikely they'd find such a relationship anything but unthinkable in the first place. For the Tilkrig, I haven't decided as of this date. The Sk'lan are perhaps small enough to be a match for them that way, but of course the current nature of the Sk'lan means we don't expect any pairings there at the moment. I have no other conception at present of a race as small as the Tilkrig otherwise inhabiting Hearthstone, and I expect I'll keep it that way, for reasons that will become clear as the Cartel cycle is wrapped up.

That said, Beamer's attraction to Sheila is the result of unusual circumstances anyway -- Beamer's tragic family life under the Sk'lan (a bit more of that in RP #5), and his trip to freedom. I don't suspect the average Tilkrig in the free world ever gets interested in one of the members of the larger races; partly because everywhere except Nullabor, interracial relationships aren't too popular and marriages are arranged; but also because, quite frankly, most of the other races could not give a Tilkrig the intellectual fulfillment they need from a marriage partner. Maybe the Drovines and a couple of others, but that's it.

I haven't designed rules for laser fencing (pages 7-9), other than the "five point spread" rule, but I imagine the workings to be something like this: The lasers pass through everything except each other; when you score a "hit" on your opponent, the sword passes through them and a score is registered in the players' glove based on the location and quality of the "hit". You can sort of guess who might be winning, but only when the totals are arrived at in the end can you be sure who won and by how much.

Annabelle and Brett manifest entirely different styles in this sport, which can be seen reflected even in how differently they approached the battle simulation back in Range Patrol #2. Annabelle is a free spirit who jumps into the air and takes risks; Brett is a cautious tactician who tends to stay in one spot and wait for an ideal opening. As with much in the way of their relationship, they're polar opposites; the result, oddly, is that they tend to cancel each other out competetively -- while when they work together, they solve problems more efficiently.

Up until now, Bimf's been pretty quiet. I've made it clear that the Sanslorian CAN talk; they just DON'T. In such circumstances I'd expect speech to be a little rough when it is used again for the first time in a long while, but as we find, once he gets going, Bimf's quite the dramatist. Behind that wall there lies the soul of an afflicted poet, which may explain why he cracked where so many Sanslorian did not.

The pacifist orientation (p. 17) of the Sanslorian is meant to mirror the stance of certain groups in the Christian tradition here, like the Quakers. Readers of my other material can guess that I'll have it so that their pacificism comes from some, well, unwarranted exegesis of the Oracles (hence, Brom Shriker doesn't think they support pacificism, p. 34). By the end of the Cartel cycle I plan to work up Bimf's trial (cf. p. 35) before the village elder, and Brett, my Hearthstone alter ego, will play (surprise!) the role of an apologist on behalf of his Sanslorian friend.

I was asked why the Sk'lan sound like Yoda (hee hee -- p. 18). They're not meant to -- it's just that Yoda sounds like many languages, such as German, where the verb is often put at the end of a sentence. If anything, credit the Sk'lan's grammar to the semester of German I took years ago.

One of the few narratives decisions I had to think on was rather gruesome -- how old should Bimf's son be? I had in mind at first that he would be about six, but in the end I decided on an infant because it would help highlight the inhumane cruelty of the Sk'lan -- as well as make it possible for them to eliminate M'chel and Bimf's son in one effort (p. 22).

One cool thing about the Sk'lan I decided on: When you kill them, their lights go out (p. 24)! Their dark "skins" are obviously some form of the integrated "circuit" panel setup I have regularly used in various places (inlcuding a non-permanent form used by the Ketterlings for laser fencing). As noted in RP #3, the Sk'lan have really gone overboard turning themselves into biological machines, and these permanent "circuit suits" are the most obvious example.

The Tilkrig's ability to lose their tail (p. 27) is perhaps a throwback to my idea of them as lizards, before I decided they should be mammals (eg, Beamer's "turret" eye as it first appeared in Range Patrol #1, but which, in updated pages of that story, I have gotten rid of). They still have some reptilian characteristics (notably, that they come in green and yellow); this one, though, seemed to be an excellent (and funny) way to make a plot point. Now at any rate you know why the Sk'lan think Beamer is dead (Range Patrol #3, page 31).

There was a bit of a decision to make as far as how Beamer would help the Sanslorian escape across the sea (p. 28 on). Three ideas came to mind: a land bridge (rejected as too obvious, and too much like a scenario from Eddings' Belgariad I didn't want to seem to imitate); swimming (maybe with their size and strength, plausible if the sea was small enough, but that would cause tactical problems in terms of the Prycenes being able to go to war with the Sk'lan); and the one that got picked, the "ark of safety". As a bonus this also showed us just how confidently domineering the Sk'lan are over their Tilkrig servants. They hold their Tilkrig in such fear that they don't even think of making an easy escape, and confidently allow them to pilot a ship like that one without supervision. Beamer obviously is a Tilkrig of a different bent (p. 30).

Note that the Prycene king and queen share symbols of power (p. 33). The king sits upon the humble throne (a symbol of the power of the state), but the queen wields the scepter (a symbol of the power of decision). Highly egalitarian system in place here, and we'll get a closer look at it in operation, I suspect, in Shrike Team #7 or so.

So now, too, we know Bimf and Beamer know Brom Shriker well. One can imagine that Brom, with his desire to keep out of the spotlight and his natural compassion, looked upon helping the Sanslorian as a project with a bonus: He got to help a bunch of people who would have no idea he was famous! Perfect! They'll have a reunion in the soon to come crossover story (ST #5/RP #6); you might suspect that the other members of the Range Patrol team have at least heard of Brom Shriker, and you'd be right, they have. But what do they think of him? Ah....wait and see. We'll have all sorts of interesting conflicts and meetings happening. Just ask yourself....

* How will Eidolon react to Annabelle, in light of Eidolon's former life as Sinclair -- and his wife, Lady Abigail? (p. 20, ST #3) What exactly IS going on there, anyway?
* Beamer already doesn't like the looks of Eidolon (RP #2, page 9), so how's he going to like it when Sheila asks him to be NICE to him?
* Brom's the celebrity, Eidolon's the major prophet...will poor Felicity be left out of the fun? No -- believe it or not, she's not unknown to ONE member of the Range Patrol team....

There's going to be more than a few surprises before the crossover story is done....

Bimf in a tux (p. 44)? That's worth the price of admission, eh? Also, look back at Range Patrol #1 in a bit after this (August 2006) where Sheila meets Annabelle for the first time. In the reworking of that older story I've decided to add in another "premonition" like the one Sheila has about the dagger. More mystery added for your enjoyment. By the way, the new wrist-wrap (p. 45) will have something to do with it, too.

Great pages. :thumb:

Perhaps in the future you could add an archival section which would allow you to peruse each individual page in the future rather than picking a chapter and clicky-clicky'ing it until you get to the right page?

SQJ, note that the page titles have the page number (three digits) after the group name (e.g. "rangtoon" for Range Patrol) and chapter number. So if you want a particular page, just click on the starting link, then change the "001" to the page number you want.

The (I figured this out after clicky-clicky'ing once too often myself) Curtmudgeon

Hey JP, you might want to check some of the hyperlinks in the RP#4 Insider (http://www.tektoonics.com/intro/rangtoon4/rangtooninsider4.html) on tektoonics.com. Specifically, all of the ones that link to any pages that aren't in Range Patrol #4. The ones within RP#4 are fine as far as I can tell, but none of the others work. They have formats like:

http://www.tektoonics.com/intro/rangtoon4/intro/rangtoon2/rangtoon2009.html

The removal of the bolded section should fix it, though, and it seems that's the problem with all of them.

Oh, and great job with the way you ended RP#4! :thumb:

...the little guy will resolve this issue in the next story, Range Patrol #5, Across the Elapine Line, and it'll pave the way for Jelica to steal his heart instead.

Can't wait to see this, I just wonder how they'll meet, one can get quite creative here :teeth:

The Tilkrig's ability to lose their tail (p. 27) is perhaps a throwback to my idea of them as lizards...

Well, atleast they grow back... :teeth:

So now, too, we know Bimf and Beamer know Brom Shriker well. One can imagine that Brom, with his desire to keep out of the spotlight and his natural compassion, looked upon helping the Sanslorian as a project with a bonus: He got to help a bunch of people who would have no idea he was famous! Perfect! They'll have a reunion in the soon to come crossover story (ST #5/RP #6); you might suspect that the other members of the Range Patrol team have at least heard of Brom Shriker, and you'd be right, they have. Heh... You're not gonna like this, JP, but I just noticed one more error on the page. The very first hyperlink won't reach the correct page, because it's set to go to "rangtoon4104" instead of "rangtoon4014". As far as I can tell, though, everything else is okay. Just fix that one thing, and I think you can finally put the HTML work to rest... for now.

Shouldn't that be "...HERE, on Nullabor?" rather than "...HERE, in Nullabor?"? Hehe, just kidding :tounge: Not only do you update the drawing, but also the plotline. I wonder whether in two years any of the original drawings (or dialogue) will remain?

I can't say whether any of the Hearthstone characters are transcriptions from bible characters. So far we have seen various archetypes, Eidolon as the prophet type and Brom having traites from both David and Samson. Maybe Sheila is to be prophetess, or a warrior, or a priestess or any number of things. We know she has some part to play with those portals though, both from Eidolons story and from "Roots of Contention". I don't know what exactly constitutes her "mission" in the past, how she gets there, how she gets back (if she gets back ) or what her destiny is, but it still seems or little Sheila gets to kick some major timewarp butt. Eidolon is of course interested in her rangs becuase Beamer is about to create a rather unique rang, which I guess is the one that becomes her signature as found in shriketoon3-79 (http://www.tektoonics.com/intro/shriketoon3/shriketoon3079.html).

Hehe, exciting plot!

Eidolon of course is Jeremiah. :hehe:

Not only do you update the drawing, but also the plotline. I wonder whether in two years any of the original drawings (or dialogue) will remain?

The changes being made to RP #1 will be the exception rather than the norm. I'm more or less back at my former peak where the art is concerned, so the way I see it, I may update a few panels (not pages) in ST #1 and even RP #2, and that will be it for art updates. I foresee no more major changes in the plotline or dialogue beyond what I do to RP #1.

I can't say whether any of the Hearthstone characters are transcriptions from bible characters.

I never had such an intention....before you got here Darth expressed a suspicion that Sheila would become Hearthstone's Mary. I hadn't thought of it that way, but to a degree he was right. Sorry....you won't find out how for a while. Maybe 4 years. However....this:

I don't know what exactly constitutes her "mission" in the past, how she gets there, how she gets back (if she gets back ) or what her destiny is, but it still seems or little Sheila gets to kick some major timewarp butt.

...will be known in about a year and a half (or even a year, if you're clever). It's going to be rather....significant. :teeth:

Eidolon is of course interested in her rangs becuase Beamer is about to create a rather unique rang, which I guess is the one that becomes her signature as found in shriketoon3-79.

Very good guess, with one minor exception I don't mind revealing...Beamer will need Jelica's help to invent the thing.

His opener sounds like my indictment article.

I thought frequently about that article while he was speaking.

But I guess it's recorded on rctr.org somehow, as I recall, so now I may just go listen to it.

Yeah, it's under Downs' resource blog entry for July 24. At least, I think it is. My computer does not handle audio so well. :glare:

So what're you gonna tell your friend who thinks I'm arrogant? :hehe:

Oh, I simply said to him, "I don't find him arrogant at all, either online or in person."

But at least that guy professes to respect you. Another friend of mine (who happens to be a fan of Flemming, Doherty, and Barker :eww:) tried a few times to brush off your articles by resorting to the usual criticisms (paraphrased as: "waaah, he uses a pseudonym, won't link to articles that he critiques, and that one time his Bible software displayed the Greek text incorrectly. Who could trust someone like that?").

Of course, he also makes various statements from time to time such as that if Christianity were true, the Bible would be geared for our culture because we're "obviously" more important and more populous. And that belief in God could never be justified under any conceivable circumstances.

He's not even the craziest fellow I've run across. I once had the misfortune of encountering a man who professed to believe that if even one god thought of by any civilization throughout history, be it Zeus or Loki, does not exist, then no gods can exist, because... well, he never really got around to explaining that. It was evidently something anyone not brainwashed as I was could see plainly. I also asked him for his best evidence for biological evolution, out of curiosity. His answer? Volcanoes change the earth's crust...

But, I digress.

No. I came in to town just a few moments earlier. Actually coming to the church then was a sort of a lark. I had been hoping to find my hosts instead, or a public library to check email from. The idea to go to the church and peek in at the conference should have occurred to me earlier and I'm surprised it didn't. I wanted to either check email or have a place to "put down" to draw some RP #1 redo pages. I ended up being able to do the latter in one of the unused classrooms for about an hour.

Jeff had an interesting place too. His backyard is a cornfield.

Cool. My family once looked at an odd house with a cornfield backyard as a possible living environment (it's a shame the walls weren't straight...). I suppose they aren't extraordinarily rare up in these parts.

What would they ever do without that? :hehe:

No doubt just complain about how "mean" you are. And if they didn't have that, I suspect they'd simply hide.

Is he cloned from Dennis McKinsey?

He might as well be. Lately, my friend's complaints have been getting a bit more feeble. For example:

In listening to the bible, it seems that the author of Matthew wanted to show that Jesus was prophesised in the OT. Mark, however, doesn't seem to take this into consideration at all. It's getting kind of annoying because they say "I guarantee" all the time.

Christians call themselves lambs or flocks, to symbolize the fact that they follow God. This seems to be a very anti-thinking statement. To me it seems to say "We're too stupid to trust our logic and reasoning abilities, so we will blindly trust that people thousands of years ago had the right religious feelings and weren't high on drugs or something."

I tried to educate him, but he basically flat-out said that he doesn't care about any of that "context" stuff, since, after all, it should've been written with our contextual standards in mind. I've more or less decided to ignore him henceforth. He even tried to write up a critique of one of your articles once. :hehe: I won't post the link here to where he did it, since he doesn't seem compelled to refer to you by your writing name. Speaking of this reminds me, one of his complaints was an HTML error that I may as well mention, since I've been doing that lately. It's your article (http://www.tektonics.org/qt/rezrvw.html) dealing with Barker's "Easter Challenge". About halfway down, there's this passage:

The main issue of difference is why only Matthew reports the angel -- as well as the other miracles recorded later -- and that matter we have answered with the principles found here (http://www.tektonics.org/qt/asilent.html).

You have it linking to:

http://www.tektonics.org/qt/asilent.html

But the article you're looking for is, I presume:

http://www.tektonics.org/af/asilent.html

And while I'm still bothering you with HTML errors, I just found another one in that same article.

I would regard these as reporting the same meeting. Luke has no room now to report a dual meeting with Thomas first excluded, and each writer has their own focus: Luke on the tangible nature of Jesus' body; John on a more theological and "commissional" issue, as well as wanting to highlight Thomas' actions. If Luke is reporting to a Roman judge on behalf of Paul (as Mauck argues (http://www.tektonics.org/qt/mauckrvw.html)) then it isn't hard to see why he would report what he did. Meanwhile John will emphasize the tangible nature of Jesus in his second report.

That's a paragraph from very close to the bottom. But, the link to your review of Mauck's Paul on Trial is wrong. You have this:

http://www.tektonics.org/qt/mauckrvw.html

When you should have this:

http://www.tektonics.org/books/mauckrvw.html

:hehe: Tekton readers do have the option to ask for spoliers. Punkish and Darth know quite bit more than most readers, and as far as I know it hasn't spoiled the reading for them. Your call, though be warned that to explain this one fully, it will reveal a LOT of major points.

Not surprisingly, one of my fave fiction writers is Harry Turtledove; he does alternate timeline fiction (eg, what if the South had won the Civil War?; in a series on that, he's now in the WW2 era, with the Confederacy fighting on the side of the UK, Japan, and France, and the US fighting on the side of a Germany where the Kaiser's rule never ended) and it gives a good chance to think while being entertained. I find it interesting how so many former atheists I have met (as he is) have so much greater awareness of the harm poor education does in church settings.

Especially if they were the sorts of atheists before their conversion who were actually somewhat interested in the issues, rather than displaying a raw sense of apathy towards the subject of religion.

Oh, I got some bigger pics....see below. He had his bath today so he's a little miffed at me. In fact I can say the word "bath" or even spell it and he starts looking around for an escape route....

Just as I expected, he's adorable. :teeth:

Just be warned that he's a little profane in places.

Eh, I'm used to a fair bit of profanity and such in one of the non-Hearthstone webcomics I read. Turtledove shouldn't give me too hard a time.

Oh, and you never said whether you were going to start that thread for Tektoon and Tekton link errors. You probably should, I collected a few during the weekend...

Yeah, sure I'll start it up. :hehe: Just one thing: There ARE some places where the links are not supposed to be active in the parodies.

Oh, that I know. I skipped over those and focused on the ones I figured you would probably want active. Good news is, I only found three on Tektoon during my search. The other four pages of notes I have are all from Tekton.

Now, JB, if he spends all his time correcting the links, it'll be even longer before we get the next Tektoon installment. If that happens, I'm sure you won't mind if the lynch mob heads in your direction.

 Fortunately, from the looks of things, he shouldn't have to put in too much time repairing links, so any Tektoon delay will be minimal, hopefully.

Eh -- I do those things at different times, anyway. Tektoonics is worked on during lunch break and in the evening; Tekton the rest of the day.

Need directions to DJ's house, since you're in that mood? :hehe:

I'm spending some time revamping RP #1 as a prep for a wider readership...renumbering the pages (it'll go from 88 down to probably 35 or 40) and redrawing stuff where the characters look a little too funky compared to now. For example, see attached -- where I did keep the last panel but redid the first two. This'll be the project for the rest of the week on toon time.

I expect to get some ST #4 pages up next week on Wednesday. Hey, at least it isn't more than a month, right? :hehe:

By the end of the Cartel cycle I plan to work up Bimf's trial (cf. p. 35 (http://www.tektoonics.com/intro/rangtoon4/rangtoon4035.html)) before the village elder, and Brett, my Hearthstone alter ego, will play (surprise!) the role of an apologist on behalf of his Sanslorian friend.:brood: I'm not going down without a fight, lad! A verbal one, at that!
