Sometimes you have to just shake up the world around you. Change the way you do things every time. Ever notice in Sunday school or in church how the teacher or preacher tends to stand behind a podium or table. Somehow this position commands respect and attention. It’s just the way it is…, the way it is done. Right??? Well next time you’re in church think about it. Looks perfectly natural?… Ready for a bombshell? Could you imagine the pastor just plopping down (sitting right down if you will), and throwing his feet up on a table? I can just see the faces of the most uptight people. How could one do such a disrespectful thing when teaching the Word of God?! It’s unthinkable… Why I never…
You might even be thinking the same kinds of things. In the words of a friend of mine Jason Gruss “that just ain’t right”. Well brothers, sisters, ladies and gentlemen, young and young at heart alike Jesus shows us something about this. I can hear it now, Adam where do you get these ideas??? Well let’s take a look shall we…
Everyone turn your Bibles please to Matthew chapter 5 verse 1 and let’s read. Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, (hey he sat down… Can you believe he sat down…) his disciples came to him. (ESV)
Okay okay, Adam ha ha we see your point. He was sitting down while he taught. Now that you point it out I can see how this would be okay… (as if anything Jesus did couldn’t be okay). Now this thing about putting your feet up… Maybe we should talk about the difference between proper posture and just hanging out. I know, I know maybe throwing your feet up is taking it a bit far but lets all once again turn our Bibles to Matthew chapter 9 verse 9 – 10. As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him. And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. (ESV)
WOW!!! What a kind of lesson can we learn here? Even relaxing Jesus showed us we can be sharing and teaching. So the next time you are all worried about someone doing something unconventional with teaching or preaching just remember they could be following the example of histories most famous teacher/preacher. It might not hurt to relax a little an show others its okay to share in any state… leaping across the stage to standing perfectly still behind a podium or even sitting down and presenting a kind ear and talking about what might be important to that person or persons next to you.
